Someone wants to be my friend!

edited December 2009 in Chit chat
I notice that I've received a notification that someone on WoS wants to be my friend (or perhaps wants me to be their friend...)

No names mentioned to protect the guilty^H^H^H^H^H^H innocent.

So, what's this friendship thing all about, then? Should I expect requests to borrow money, and will we fall out if I don't remember to send Christmas cards for the next thirty years?

Good question. I have a couple, havent added anyone myself. Does it give you any advantages or differences or is it like Facebook and the 'fake friends' list ?

I just normally stick to PM's

All you had to do was just ignore it!

( Just kidding, I just now sent my friend request to you, so it couldn't have been me ... this means you'll have to start another thread asking "Why did I get a Friend Request from that ZnorXman person/thingy?" )

Does it do anything though ? I mean can 'friends' see your details (Eg the location/hobbies etc), i thought everyone could. Does it allow friends anything else ?

Or is just simply a number of 'virtual friends' to add ?

All I see it as, is just a friendly gesture, that is all really. ( Nah, it's just because you don't have any Real Life friends and are trying to make yourself feel good. -ed )

And having said that I apoligise if I've not sent friend-requests to WoSsers who definitely ought to be on my friendlist ... hey, don't hesitate to send me a friend request! ;-)

Okay, RoseCotton. As you know it was me that wanted to be your friend - after the Dan O'Bannon post you made.

I also wanted to befriend you to offer my coding advice, for what it is worth, because you are making simplistic errors that could be easily corrected, and, rather than pull you up in public, I thought it best to do it, eventually, via PM.

I think it is great that someone is starting from scratch and wish someone had helped me early on to save wasted time.

The friendship thing is just a handshake. A formality. If I'd have known you would go public with it (even though everyone can see your 'friends' by checking your "View Public Profile" - click on the username just above your avatar) I might not have bothered.

    Have fun.

    No frobush! It was moi!

And it's just because I like Mr. Gardner! Any friend of his is a (potential) friend of mine.

It bloody wasn't you! It was bloody well me!

I'm his best mate, not you! Sod off!

I have no grassy turf to off on to!

And "he" is a "she" ... at least that's what Mr. Gardner wants to believe!

    Oh, my mistake.

If he's a girl then she can't program anyway, so we are all wasting our time!

I'm still confused about ZX Beccy.

I'm still confused about me! Frobush is a non sexual name and the number of times people have tried to have cybersex with me, all 5 sexes, is quite an eyefull!

EDIT - I've only ever met one female programmer over the 30 odd years - and she was RUBBISH!

Thanks for that, although I assume you can only know about my simplistic errors because I've been asking questions in a public forum... so I actually choose to 'go public' myself, and if, as a result, some people think I'm a clueless buffoon, then I can take it!

Also, as far as I can tell, you haven't sent me any PMs offering advice 'in private' as a result of my simplistic errors -- and presumably you could (or could've) sent PMs with or without my being your 'friend'?

The reason I 'went public' (although that seems an odd way to put it when, as far as I can see, everyone's friend list is public information anyway) was just -- as my OP said -- to ask what, if any, implications there are to having 'friends' on this forum. Or, to put it another way, is there any 'point' to this forum-friend concept.

I don't think I'm any the wiser on that -- as far as I can see it doesn't offer any additional privileges or functionality. Perhaps someone can correct me on this if I'm mistaken.

I'm happy to proceed in whatever way would make you happiest: I had accepted your offer of friendship (although, as I say, I don't know in what way that's an advantage -- or a disadvantage -- to either of us!), but, if you're now regretting the offer, I'm happy to 'delete' you as a friend -- assuming it works like that.

I meant to mention in my previous reply, that, if it makes any difference to anything, I am male...

I can assure you, though, that my maleness doesn't mean I can program! ;)

It'll do nothing to quell the rumours about him in the Gamgee family ("always up the Bag End" so they say). His Uncle Andy was particularly free when it came to spreading them...
