sorry for losing my temper and taking everything out on you ewgf. You just happened to be the last straw in the general downward slide these forums are taking

I suspect that won't count as a proper apology and I'll get banned anyway. For all the people who still want to talk about retro computer stuff and can manage to behave in a civilised way (okay I know I've not done that this last few weeks either!) I hope that the community can drag itself out of this nosedive.

Everybody keeps going on about the community taking a nosedive.....Have I missed something? I've just had the most Speccy filled ZXmas since 1991 with loads of folk pulling together to make it ace and I've been having the best laugh on here in ages, and even added some Wossers on Facebook...

So why all this crazy talk and people wandering off or having a go at folks or generally not getting along? Why all the talk of it "not being the same"..... What makes this forum great and the most active retro site I've ever been on is the diversity of the Spec-chums who fill it's forums and their different opinions....

This is the Chit Chat section...that's what it's meant for! Why do people have a problem with it? And no-one can complain about a lack of Speccy stuff....just look at how many games were released this year....and all the books! And everything else that's in the pipeline!!

So come along chaps....pull yourselves together! It's a blimmin' New Year, with new hopes and dreams and I'll be damned if I'm going to watch this Wonderful World Of Spectrum fall into chaos after a great Christmas like that! If someone is getting you down on here, let them know nicely over a cup of steaming cocoa...don't jump down their neck and try to pluck out their gizzards....

By God we're all the Speccy's got left...let's do the old boy proud!!!

Hear hear... I've honestly been sat here thinking the same. Can't we all just get along, dammit?

    Hear Hear!

You know though I've stayed out of the Dr. Who thread since it was started since even though I like Dr. Who I haven't watched a single episode since that piss poor chrimbo special with Paul McGann. So therefore can't really add anything constructive?

I'd like to have but I was working 3rds in England when I lived there when the new doc started, and I've been working 3rds here in the USA since BBC America started showing it.

I noticed there's been a lot of activity in that thread recently so I looked out of curiousity and the first post I see is a warning from Rollings? I was like eh? So I did some back-tracking.

I'm just curious how can a thread about Dr. Who turn into a flame war (well actually given how some crazy sci-fi nerds can get that's kind of rhetorical, but I didn't think the peeps on here were that obsessed )?

Anyway I'd say WoS was back on the up after another rough patch, and I'm going to continue doing Speccy type stuff. I'm already reworking Miles Mad Mission, whilst working on a smaller side project, and I posted the 3rd chapter of the 3 word story book on tape up earlier (I know it's crap but it's just a bit of fun :D). Once I'm done with as much JSW as I can cope for this winter with I think I'm going to attempt a stab at AGD or PGD, and see how that comes along?

Anyway that's my couple of shiny bits o' copper, and yes christmas was ace bestest for the Speccy one of the most productive in a long time, as you say since 91', and I believe it may have outweighed 92' completely for quality product released at christmas weither it just randomly appeared or was hyped up a little bit first.

....I do think we're doing the Speccy proud as well christmas was proof that there's still plenty life left in the ol' ZX yet, which is nice, and makes me smile :)

I see Miles Mad Mission is on that list (somebody must've complained about the Mongy Lard, or the Gamestage screen, or maybe just the swearing ).

Must admit I stayed away a bit over the holidays, was fed up with the whole '.....mas' episode we had a while back ! Just ridiculous.

Thing is people should go to these retro shows, 'brings everyone together' kinda thing, you get to know others and realise that someone posting something isn't always in the tone you think it was posted in. After meeting Mr Cheese, Miles, A.Rollings, Binman, Gasman, Winston, Foggie and many others i know theyre top blokes so read their posts in a different way (if you know what i mean).

As for Dr Who not a fan at all, tempted to wade in and say how rubbish it is but i thought i'll stay out of that thread ! On the other hand if someone doesnt like stuff like 'celebrity jungle' they often post in to moan about it

Theres a ton of different characters in the retro scene, very difficult to keep everyone happy. Hope a fair few new WOSsers go to the show in Sheffield in April

I dunno, this site has become very much a clique. It was never like that a couple of years ago. AND, because it has a clique. non clique people say things...and hey presto!...the clique jump down their throats!

Well, a collection of cliques with plenty of "independents" - wouldn't say there's a single dominant one like in the late CSS days. Unavoidable, really, given the sheer variety of stuff being done in the scene.

But there's no excuse for flaming people - this isn't Usenet.

Weird...I was actually thinking it was becoming less of a clique than it was when I first joined the site...

I've only really started posting more over the last couple of years, and although at first I felt a bit wary I soon realised that what initially seemed a bit stand-offish and rude or weird, was actually just some of the Wossers way of breaking you in (so to speak)...and as long as you remain calm/witty/nice/completely bloody mental you quickly become part of the gang...Just like school or college or knitting club or whatever...You've just got to put up with in jokes and long running gags until you understand what the hell's going on...

We've had quite a few new members come along, and everyone is usually very welcoming...it's just that I think some of them get scared off when their "Hello" thread goes a bit off the wall...:)

If I had to sum up the Spectrum 2009 year, I would say:

    Great:
Almost everything, new games, new books, new website updates, new hardware...

    Bad:
    Fights at the forum

You don't need to be a specialist to notice that some veteran users here aren't happy with the forum nowadays.

But it's not so easy to say why they aren't happy. The repeated sentence "Things are no longer as they used to be" doens't explain so much.

As I joined about 2005 I don't have idea as it used to be in 2000 on some discussion groups. I have only a vague idea that everything was smaller and quieter and more techy. Less posters, less posts but percentage of posts relating directly to Spectrum much higher.

For me it's not a problem. If I'm not intrerested in some topics, I don't read them.
Imo we have a great communty, great site and Zx Spectrum is very alive. We should really enjoy what we have as other old computers don't have it :)

Yes, its great here, although I'm often away for months on end, I can't help but to check the latest posts on here every few days or so.

I don't think it's too cliquey and the reason I say that is because I've think I've seen every one of the few "megaposters" disagree on some issue with most of the other megaposters over something. As long as it remains cilivised then regular disagreement is a good thing.

I was tempted to change my sig to read "The above post is no way meant to be taken seriously" as I think that's a good general rule, just don't take anything too seriously on here. It's just a bit of a laugh.

I've never felt unwelcome here and I'm just on the periphery of most of the activities.

I know at least five or six forums out there of which I am a member and that are less friendly than this one.

Besides, it's a new year now so time to flush the past down the toilet and start on a brand new bog roll as it were. erm.. :D

Nah...it was all the mongy lards and collanders...bit much for someone who came on to find some cheats for Speccy games!

Maybe I'm just reading the wrong threads, but I see just as much arguing and disagreeing as there's ever been, it's just some of it seems to be getting a bit more catty and stupid..probably because we're all turning into grumpy old men and women and losing braincells....;)

Anyhoo, I'm happy to keep visiting WOS and if there are those who aren't then I hope they come back after a break refreshed and happy and ready to rejoin the madness! And any new folks out there who feel a bit dubious about joining in, just keep posting, start a few threads and hopefully you'll come to enjoy the place as much as me....

True, it is a great community. Not much fighting compared to other forums in truth. I joined originally in 2003 and I've only been interested in the games and memories of old..and I've still been made welcome. Despite some geeky snobbery that persists, it's a great site.

Dont think theres any cliques, i know some people probably dont like a lot of the regular posters (including me) here at Chit Chat, but i think its a great mix of people, some post more than others but its far better than some forum which is dead (Lemon 64 for example) and like i've said a few times the people who do meet up at retro shows are a great bunch

Most forums go through times of aggro or being quiet (or the opposite), it'll all settle down soon.

True, but also bear in mind that the Sinclair retroscene has been around a *very* long time. I date back to 1992 and the old SincNews Mailing List days. Back then, emulation had only reached good-enough 16k and 48k emulation, games were only available as memory-dump snapshots (SNA files), and if you wanted to play a multiload game or even just load something from tape, you'd have had to build your own tape interface circuit or hope someone's hacked in a workaround.

SincNews was *very* techy as a result, with the first wave of basic Spectrum emulators being written, so lots of talk of probing original Spectrum hardware, examining the ROM, etc. But there was a thin slice of talk from the Spectrum users old and new from a user perspective.

The Comp.sys.sinclair Usenet newsgroup was created in 1993 when running SincNews stopped becoming viable (running simple mailing lists back then was a massive task), and with the additional exposure that being on Usenet gets you, it grew and grew from techy roots into a more user-centric forum.

When it got rather big in the late '90s, the social element kicked in big time, so a lot of off-topic stuff appeared, and was really fun. Unfortunately, whilst we were enjoying ourselves we noticed that the sheer volume of off-topic stuff was alienating a lot of valuable contributors who found it difficult to keep up. And, as with most social scenes, cliques appeared which came and went, leaving one central dominant clique who you either loved or hated (or ignored). The off-topic stuff became the central focus of CSS, such that when WOS Forums started up in December 2000 it became a liferaft for people who wanted to stay more on-topic.

The migration from CSS to WOS had various bits of unpleasantness as the dominant clique became less inclusive, and I can't help feeling that some people still hold a grudge for CSS's decline because their own position in the community has had to evolve as a result. It doesn't surprise me that some veterans decided to leave rather than adapt - you can see which ones are unhappy just through their posts.

From my point of view, the quality and variety of the community is at a high-point. Being mainly web-based has opened it up to practically everybody who can use a search engine, and that's enough to hook those people in who could contribute something significant. And keeping the flaming out of the public arena can only be a positive thing to do.
For me it's not a problem. If I'm not intrerested in some topics, I don't read them.
Imo we have a great communty, great site and Zx Spectrum is very alive. We should really enjoy what we have as other old computers don't have it :)

    Completely agree.

Perhaps I'm socially inept, but I've never perceived a clique here. Indeed, I don't really know how to identify one, having never came across one.
  • edited January 2010
Is the word "clique" negative in English ?

In Polish we have a similar word "klika" which is negative and even a bit offensive. It means a group of people who will ALWAYS support a member of the clique even if they know that he isn't right. They have their secrets that they don't want to share with others, treat badly pleople that don't belong to their group and are generally negative about anybody new joining them.

So imo we don't have a "klika" at WOS as it's too strong describtion.

But I can see here a group of "techy" people and the rest :)
