I have thought a little bit about things touched in this thread and I really feel that "other computers" technical forum is necessary.
I have checked how it is solved on other retro sites.
LemonAmiga has separate forums:
- chit chat
- retrogaming (other computers than Amiga)
Lemon64 has:
-chit chat
- other 8-bit C= computers (whatever that means)
http://zx.pk.ru (the biggest Russian Spectrum forum) has over 30 forums and among them (names translated):
- home computers
- foreign computers (other than Spectrum)
I know that we are better but sometimes the better can also learn from the worse ;)
I know also that it is Zx Spectrum forum but other topics are touched anyway. So forums are used to organise talk a give it a structure. You don't throw everything to the same basket. If some people would like to have technical talk separated from "social" talk and get angry seeing "rubbish" social talk, let's separate them and the problem will become solved.
There is also a point that if you want to talk for example about PC programming you'll go to proper specialistic forum.
But to be honest I'd really like to ask people from WOS first, instead of going to specialistic forum. Here I know that I'll be answered by friendly, mature, competent people (let's state it loud WOS IS FRIENDLY :) A lot of people here seem to work in computer industry and are really experts in programming, networks, databases, electronics and whatever you can think of.
And on so called specialistic forum I have a big chance of being ignored, laughed at and called a lamer or told to use google by some bloated ego teenager.
I'd really suggest making a forum about other computers. It's not a betrayal of Spectrum, Speccy will remain our number one, cause we love it and other computers just we use :)
Maybe we could use a poll to determine what people think about it?
Hey that`s the second call for me to be banned, I heard it is three strikes and you are out, I seem to be getting as popular as Cornish Davey.............;)
Every time I read that the oldest person in the world has died, I have to do a quick check to see it isn't ME..........

I like the Chit Chat forums. I don't see a need to split it into sub topics. Without a "chit chat" forum then the irrelevance would spread over into the other forums, which would be bad.

Yes...which is one of the reasons it was put in place to begin with if I remember correctly.
It's a simple case of don't go there if you don't like it, if you want a pc chat forum....go to a PC chat forum where the content will most likely be richer than a sub forum on a speccy site....toms hardware is probably one of the bigger PC forums.
He wasn't talking about you -RubberKeys- ... he was walking about another former forum regular by the name of rubberkeys ... completely different kettle of cod.

For what it's worth, I think WOS is great, though yes, the troubles in recent months have been very worrying. I can't say I've noticed any elitism, but perhaps that's because I've never read any thread that contains that problem (if any), as there are many topics I don't bother reading, although I do tend to read the threads that sound like I might have some chance of helping with (such as "What Game is this?", "How do you load a game in x emulator?", "Which emulator works best for...?" etc. Basically the non-techy questions), and I'd expect those, if any, to be the targets of long term WOS snobbery, if any such snobbery is present. Or maybe the alleged elitism occurs in the fewer more technical questions, such as "I'm new here, but how do I time my screen updates to avoid screen flicker on my sprites?", which is something you won't find me answering, and probably not even reading.
I go on a few forums, sometimes out of genuine interest in the subject matter, and sometimes to kill time (when I should be doing other things...). And it seems to me that it's often the younger posters who are the worst for trolling, though it's certainly not a cast-iron rule. The forums with fewer members seems to have less trolling (even as a percentage of the posts), especially if the posters are older, and of the same interests. Gamefaqs is probably (I'd say certainly) the forum out of all the ones I visit regularly that has the highest proportion of trolling and juvenile idiots, and also the worst moderators (they are legendarily bad). The reason I still post there is that despite all the trouble seeking morons (who are still very thin on the ground, just higher in numbers there than in many other forums) there are lots of people who just want to discuss things maturely and will argue clearly and politely not because they want to cause trouble, but because they believe in what they say, which is fair enough. GFs has a board for every games machine (computer, console, hand held etc) and every single game (seriously!) released for those machines, from every machine you can name, so you can almost always find fans of any game you like to discuss it with, but since the site has so many members, is so well known, and is open to all computer gamers, you do get some real idiots posting there.
By contrast, possibly the best behaved forum I frequent is one soley for Goldeneye/Perfect Dark hacking (hacking via Gameshark or emulator), which has a small but friendly number of poosters, who go out of their way to help people, and I honestly don't think I've ever seen s single trollish comment on there. Maybe that's down to the moderating as much as the actual posters, but whatever reason, it's as peaceful and supportive as you could wish a forum to be.
The WOS forum is still my favourite, though, partly because it's something I'm very interested in, partly since it's part of my childhood memories, and also because I've made so many friends here (*everyone looks away, muttering*). Chit-chat is my favourite, mainly because I've been here so long that almost everything that can be asked/said/discovered about the Spectrum has already been either posted by or more probably read by me, so the Spectrum posts aren't usually as interesting to me as they would have been years ago, though still some very interesting ones do come up now and again, and it's always good to try and help someone with a "What game is this?" or whatever type question.
I was supset that Karingal and Dunny left, and I hope they come back soon. This site, and the chit-chat section especially helps to calm me down when things are bad (I know people who have terrible problems, which makes me realise how lucky I am, and sometimes not being able to significantly help their situations makes me feel really bad, and then the normality of things like the chit-chat posts helps me feel grounded again).
Anyway, thanks to Martijn, Foggy, Andrew R, etc for all of their hard work, and to all of the posters (even Mel, with his crap musical tastes ;)) for keeping these forums so interesting.
Why was this thread called "Come along chaps..."? Surely it should have been called "Come on chaps, settle down*" ?
* This is what the geography teacher says to the boys when he arrives at the classroom, and if you didn't get the reference then shame on you! Go and play Skololdaze at once**.
** Not exactly a punishment, is it? As punishments go it's like being told to have sex with Lily Allen (yummy) - I mean as long as she promises not to try to talk like she's poor, or "down" with the kids, or whatever.
*I saw the poosters too, I was trying to think of something rude to fit the word, drew a blank so far though :D
I think Poosters should be the name of a variant on Poo-sticks where, instead of using sticks, the players crap over one side of a bridge, and the winner is the one whose crap floats out the other side first.
I would imagine diet is a very important aspect of this game.
