As for the wrist restraint, it is a professioanl piece of gear and very strong, even with two very heavy padlocks and the chain as tightly fixed as possible, it takes me 5 seconds to get out of, so for him it was only there for show.

And before you ask, yes I have worn straightjackets, in the course of performance though !

I never mentioned the restaints (which he didn't get out of EDIT - he got out of the hand ones).

What was the point of the stunt?

Shackled and set on fire. Escape the shackles - then what? What next? Walk to the bar and order a drink whilst still on fire?

I'm sure Ron has some amazing stories to tell (if he is still twisting and twirling on this mortal coil) - as do you.

This isn't the right thread, but - do tell all! I find this stuff fascinating.

EDIT - your previous post beat me to it!

He died about three or four years ago now.

I was always amazed by Maskelyne's levitation technique of moving the finely balanced 'fanning' suspension wires away from the subject being lifted. Quite unique. And hard to spot.

    EDITED for no taste.

He actually restored the original.........I have seen the plans and photos and attended the lecture, Wikki sucks although it does actually say he reconstructed it, which is actually a little more accurate, he is a master of Autometa and Magical Invention, but well done for actually taking the time to check him out, plus, he is also a nice guy ! But perhaps you were a bit nearer the mark when you said " machine " , in inverted commas, you would not believe the real truth of it, I am sure.

I thought the original was destroyed in a fire? I'd love to see it performing...

Oh I take that back about wikki, I looked a little further and they have the situation nailed, it is truly an impressive invention and worth further investigation.

Yup absolutely. I read a few articles about it in Chess magazines back when I was a fully-fledged nerd. An amazing piece of work, even down to the positioning of a candleabra to disguise the smoke channeled from the lamp inside the box.

One of the best clips of Groucho...

Harpo (dressed as Groucho) is an spy and enters Groucho's house. He accidentally breaks a large mirror. When Groucho enters, Harpo pretends to be his mirror image to avoid being caught...
