A couple of ZX81 users did. Here's one example:

And they also use interfaces for MMC and SD cards, USB, etc. They send SMS messages, have AY interfaces, web servers hosted in ZX81s, colour interfaces, etc.

Just a couple of days ago I saw the ZX81 being pushed to the limit with this new demo:

you can make UDG's or redefine chars on a zx81? so maybe thats how possible :) don't know how to code zx, but redefining chars on the go with a c 64 is handy for many things

I don't know. I think this makes no sense.

What I tried to explain was that ZX81 users have, in many cases, taken their computer to the limits. Between 2006 and 2009 I saw:

-Colour interfaces (to give colour to the ZX81)
-SD and MMC interfaces (to be able to load software instantly)
-SMS messaging - I saw this video clip a few weeks ago. Someone wrote the message on their ZX81 and a few seconds later it showed up on their mobile phone.
    -Siggi's web server - A simple website hosted on Siggi's ZX81. Impressive.
-AY interfaces - The Zon-X81 received a little bit more attention, and a new AY interface is being developed.

I hope this makes more sense than the previous post. :)

I've seen it, touched it. (except the colour video) Seeing lots of ZX81 with Hires LCD screens using USB-sticks for storage is strange. Noticing the ZXTeam members consider their gear just normal is stunning...

@fog: There exist some five different methods for real HiRes on ZX81. Redefining Char's is the simplest method for pseudo HiRes.

    I think you're under-selling it a bit there... :-)

If I'm not mistaken, even this "simple" method involves exploiting the internal behaviour of the display hardware, using carefully-timed writes to screen memory to change the displayed character as it's being drawn. It's effectively the ZX81's equivalent of multicolour hacks on the Speccy, or FLI mode on the C64.

You describe a method for creating animated screens. The 'NoLimits' demo is stunning and creating such is far from simple. Whathever Hires method has been chosen. You might compare it with the bouncing and rotating ball in '25thanni' found at http://members.fortunecity.com/bodo4all/
