good driving games

Suggestions for good racing games please.
P.S.
is there a 3d racing game like enduro racer or WEC, that actually involves a race with other vehicles? and your position is on screen

I always loved Full Throttle - bikes i know , but it does have your position on screen and plays well.

Full Throttle is a proper marmite game ! Can be so frustrating ! The second you hit someone and go back a ton of places, arrgh !

Great game for its time though

Its not 3d (sorry !) but i used to love the Stock Car Championship games, great budget games. I always zipped past the qualifying, put all the computer cars up to the highest skill level, do the minimal laps and really enjoyed the race to the title as you got points per race. Quite tough against the computer

Power Drift is well worth checking out, an excellent conversion in my opinion.

that is the sort of game i mean, it has all the features i mentioned, the graphics are a bit basic and its hard as but i suppose takes practice.

The stock car game i've been playing for about an hour now, i'm on the 8th track and i got most points, very addictive good choice:grin:

If you're happy with top-down racing, try Super Cars. I played it a lot on the ST and didn't realise there was a Spectrum version. The magazines seemed to like it. It's a scrolling overhead racer where you win prize money to upgrade or replace your car. To start with you bump your way around, but as you work your way up you have to take more and more notice of racing lines, acceleration, etc. I've never seen that level of precise handling and sophistication in a 3D racer until the PlayStation came along. Make sure to load it in 128K mode for best results.

TT Racer is an old favourite, although it's much more of a sim racer than an arcade game. Be prepared to put lots of practice in before you can get round a lap without crashing, let alone at racing speeds.

There's also Stunt Car Racer which, whilst fulfilling your basic criteria, is decidedly oddball. Still, give it a go and see how you get on.

Yeah its a great game ! Make sure you play the first one, the sequel wasnt bad but much prefer the 'rawness' of the original.

Its good as if you get stuck (what a nightmare it is trying to reverse !) you can move onto the next race (and automatically get 4th place). I'm sure you dont have to keep hammering the 'gear up' key but i always do !

The level of difficulty (when all the computer cars are on 20) is superb. Let me know if you win it your first try, some of the later courses are quite tight and its easy to get stuck or get into a huge mosh with the others !

    Theres i think 20 tracks

Well, I don't think it really tracks the cars on the circuit. You just have to overtake a certain number. The arcade original had a neat (if flickery) 3D system but there was nothing special about the gameplay.

Theres 24 tracks I finished the game and won it got a bit hairy on some of the later tracks.
1st 112 pts Kempston (blue car) ME!
    2nd 80 pts computer15 (yellow car)
    3rd 74 pts computer15 (green car)
    4th 70 pts computer15 (white car)

I'm gonna try some of the other games posted later on when i play on the speccy again

Edit: Wow this was my 100th post, Here's to another 100 ;)

Yeah give the sequel a go...

Not too bad, much of the same. The graphics are so bad but the gameplays good, enjoyable Super Sprint type game but with a leaderboard.

    Just thought ...

Power Drift ? That has a leaderboard with places, i sooo wanted this game to be good but sadly it wasnt brilliant. Not bad though but can get a bit odd at times with the hills/bridges etc

Arrgh its denied but you might have to 'Google' it instead ;)

For a real race game against other cars, try Nigel Mansell's Grand Prix, expecially in 128k

    Really good!

definitely a cool game i'd say the gran turismo of its day and another addictive one i'll spend hours, f-zero on the snes had really nice feel and that was before the ps1

I could never really get a feel for those mode 7 racers (I have Crash Team Racing on the GBA) where you'd stop dead and bounce backwards if you tried to run over the completely flat graphic at the edge of the road. Slow or skid maybe, even have a black sheer drop-off, but rebounding from a floor tile was just daft.

I played this game back in the day with a couple of pals a few times, I remember it was quite a good laugh multi-player - if you start losing you can drive around the tracks the wrong way to sabotage your opponents...

I also recall using an old games console controller (can't remember which one exactly) which meant you didn't need to constantly tap the gear change button, and you could also take corners without skidding.

Am I the only person here who liked Out Run then?

I got it with my +3 back in 93' or 94', and even though it's quite disappointing I played it quite a bit, would've been a different story if it was a tape though, as it were the disk made for a quicker experience.

Ohh, I think I see. Both WEC and Enduro racer track the other racers do they? Ah, right, yes. The original post didn't say that the cars had to be tracked, just that it should be like WEC or Enduro Racer (or was that meant to be Enduro? :D) F'me CC is an awsome racer. And nothing special about the gameplay? Whhhhaaaatt? It's a real smooth racing ride, mahn! :D

(tho a bit too easy for most folk, maybe.)

Yeah , was gonna mention this also , top game.

Also what was that overhead powerbike racer with the twisty-turny courses? That was pretty cool

You could try Aspar GP Master, it's a 50cc moto simulator in topdown view and very easy iirc. The interesting thing is you can play the entire Tournament.

From Spain there is also Carlos Sainz, a rally simulator. Also topdown view, but a very hard game (at least for me), with a quite realistic control type.

I love this game on the Amstrad, you get used to the controls 'n' difficulty level fairly quickly, as you don't need to tear around at full-pelt to qualify. Not played the Speccy one. Oh, them fiendish Spaniards had some brilliant games!

Games i've teated from this thread:
Powerdrift - tried it last night and thought it played smooth and fast plus you get positions like i requested:grin:

continental circus has a nice arcade feel again a good game

I couldn't get Nigel mansell GP to work

Outrun seems really slow and couldn't they at least make the car red like it is in the loading screen? poor conversion.

It would seem that racing games on the speccy were best done in 2d like supercars and stock car series they're the ones i find to be addictive games.

I think Outrun on the Speccy is a wee bit of a Marmite game. Personally, I think it's great... a little on the slow side, granted, but it's easily got the best graphics of all the 8-bit versions. It might be worth giving Turbo Outrun a try... doesn't look as nice as the original, but it is faster.

I know you said racing games, but Turbo Esprit is a cracking driving game, if you're interested:

Seconded on all counts! Especially Turbo Outrun. OMGG, how could I have forgotton that? Love the game (note to self: Track down +3 disk version and buy it!)

turbo outrun has great music but i'm having trouble fast loading the game with k7zx cos its so big

I dread to think what Outrun would have looked like on the Speccy with a red car - unless the background was red too of course!

ok a bit more colour, hang on managed it superhot.png an arcade classic like outrun deserved a better conversion0.jpg

I would like to see the Out Run sprites used on an Wec Le Mans/Chase H.Q style track. They both gave a better impression of speed.

Y'know I thought the same thing. The loading screen managed a red car, they could surely have used some artistic tricks to keep the colour 'blocks' in check, and produce a red car for the game. The thing is though, I thought it was so slow and boringly unplayable that it would have made no difference to me anyway!

'Hang On,' incidentally was quite a good speccy conversion in my opinion. Fast, and reasonably playable.

I always loved the C64 version of Outrun. The graphics were a bit crude, but the playability was really good. I got a rush with the speed it played at, and I loved the smooth precision in steering that allowed for a great gameplay mechanic.
