I finally got around to watching Avatar (the 3D version) last Thursday, then went again yesterday (as if James Cameron isn't rich enough).

Maybe the fact that I've been twice is sufficient to tell you what I thought of it.

Didn't go much on it, a bit too wooden for me. Didn't see the 3d version though.

    I much preferred '9'.

Hmm, I went to see the 3D version on Friday - pretty much all style with no substance. I don't think I'll be renting out Titanic any time soon, either

Aw, you should, Titanic is a lot better than Avatar.

I watched Avatar on opening night a month ago and I liked it. I can't understand why some people get headaches?...they must be concentrating on the wrong thing. :/

I have tickets again, for tomorrow night and I'm looking forward to seeing it again then.

...and I've even bought tickets (I'm bringing two friends) for the BFI IMAX in London too, and since I live in Denmark I think that's proof I didn't hate it. ;) It's almost completely sold out though, so my tickets are for the last day at the BFI - about 6 weeks from now.

However, 3 times in the cinema is enough for this one. I watched Aliens 4 times at the cinema and I've seen it 60+ times by now, but although I did like Avatar I know I'll never see it that many times. It's good - not but not that great.

That's exactly it. It isn't 'true' 3D - you cannot choose what to focus on, it is forced upon you.

How to avoid getting a 3D headache while watching Avatar

Somehow I thought that link would lead straight to a certain someone smashing a pair of 3D specs with a hammer !....................
Every time I read that the oldest person in the world has died, I have to do a quick check to see it isn't ME..........

I managed to get a free ticket to see the film, but, erm, there was a catch...

And that was on DVD on a normal telly!

Yeah - it's very simple really: you're not supposed to look at the parts that are out of focus. Look at what's sharp and you'll be okay.
...how hard can it be? :p

I saw this the other day, and thought it was perfectly decent...

A little boring at the start and a completely un-original story, but it all fitted together well enough and looked spiffy! As long as you take it for what it is (a blockbuster movie that's big on action and special effects and doesn't require you to work out complex plots or dialogue) it's all good...

Once all films look this good, it'll seem a bit more rubbish though.....:)

If I pay that much to see a film, I will look at any bit of it I want ! That is like buying a book and being told to only read the first word on each page, although with certain books, that is what you are supposed to do........

I'm a bit late, but I'd rather not watch Avatar. I loathe CGI laden movies on sight. I'll watch Slumdog Millionaire or something like that with proper a story and actors.
I stole it off a space ship.

Surely it's more like watching any other film ever made and finding that when characters in the foreground are in close, tight focus, the background isn't? 'Up' did this, occasionally even blatantly shifting focus in the 3D scene from one character to another when they spoke, and no-one slated the film for it.

Personally, if I've paid to see a film I'm willing to let the director direct what he wants me to see, even if it is just Pocohontas or Ferngully remade with Thundercat-Smurf hybrids, it's still possible to hold my attention with good visuals.

Heh, watched Avatar 3D a while ago and liked it. I didn't expect a complicated story in the first place so I just enjoyed the ride for its eye candy.

Anyway, as you mentioned Aliens: there were quite a few things that reminded me of Aliens - not just Sigourney Weaver, but also the people awaking from the cryo-sleep units at the beginning ... and one quote from the character played by Weaver when she ranted at Jake for not having any training for the environment on the planet - reminded me of the line "This little girl has survived longer than that, with no weapons and no training" or whatever she said ... made me wish Bill Paxton had been in Avatar too. Would have even been ample opportunity to yell "game over, man" this time round :D

Oh, and the score was composed by James Horner too.

this is the thing that worries me, I've watched 3d films over the years and for me I still see 2 images.

If an object is in the foreground it almost becomes one image, but still slightly split. Anything in the background forget it the two images of the same object only half overlap each other.

I remember reading an article a while ago that said the success of new home media type stuff is largely down to early adopters of these new technologies.
Who are these early adopters of new technology, well apparently people who want to watch porn. Vhs,Cd roms and Dvds apparently if dirty old men hadnt bought into these technologies when they were in their infancy they may not have been financialy viable.

I can only hope the same wont be true for 3d tv!. Oh the horror of big wibbly things coming at you in 3d and thats just mr Kamerons output.

Well I watched it last night and I really enjoyed it. I grant you the story is hackneyed and some of the dialogue is terribly clunky, but it carried me with it all the way. I wasn't really bored at any point and the visuals were absolutely stunning.

I watched it at the Imax in Waterloo. Does anyone know if there is a substantial difference in the quality of Imax 3d compared to the Dolby 3d and real 3d that standard cinemas use?
