Am i an alcoholic?

I'm enjoying a week off work at the moment, but i think i may be turning into an alcoholic.
Tonight i decided not to have a drink, but by 8.30 i was getting agitated and yep, went to Asda and got a bottle of Southern Comfort which i'm having now.
I never drink if i'm working the next day but when the weekend comes i feel like i must have a drink or i get pissed off.
I shouldn't be drinking at all because of a (suspected) stomach ulcer.
Should i check into the Priory?:-?

all depends how much you drink when you do.

sometimes I get a craving for booze, much like chocolate and 1001 things.. so I just have a JD and thats it.. I don't need to finish the bottle.

but if you drink every day, then yer it's easy to gradually drink more and more.. I guess when your having it in ya cornflakes instead of milk etc thats a bad sign

I heard somewhere that a glass of red wine before going to bed is good for the stomach ... but there's a thick line between a glass of wine and the whole bottle.

You might be becoming an alcoholic but maybe you are just going through something temporary that's making you "want" to drink issues away? Think about it.

if your drinking to feel normal then your an alchy.

if your drinking to have fun, then your not.

i did what you did for a long time, drinking on my own every weekend. even if i was at an event with no booze id have a drink on my person.

i don't know your personal situation, but i did it cos i was lonely and it made me feel better.

since i started going out with my girl i barely drink at all, even when i go out i just drink water. (with a bunch of pills  )

try getting a social hobby, you don't have to even go outside. online games, chat rooms. even buying something like a ps3 might give you something else to do.

    ideal hands and all that.

i got that same itchy feeling though when i was off work too, seemed like a waste of an evening without a drink if you know what i mean.

doesn't sound like its a massive problem though. ;)

did a shop assistant at oddbins tell you that?

Certainly sounds like something of a dependent behaviour (not necessarily an actual addiction like alcoholism) which is never that good of a thing, even if it's something less harmful or addictive than alcohol. As mile says, finding something else to occupy you and take you away from feeling you need the drink to fill the gap is probably a good idea, especially if you have a possible ulcer because the booze really can't be helping that.

I am drinking red wine at 0530

    Two reasons:
    - I have just got in from work so technically this is my evening
    - I am a pisshead

I think if I was in your position (including the realisation that there might be a problem), I'd stop drinking alcohol altogether for at least a couple of weeks; in fact probably until it doesn't make you pissed off any more.

I'd want to show who was in charge here. And if it makes you pissed off for a couple of weeks, then I would suggest that you grit your teeth and just be pissed off. Being pissed off for a while is okay, and showing who is in charge isn't necessarily supposed to be easy!

Hmm, cheers for thw advice. Certainly a lot to think about. I'll do that over a large Southern Comfort! No seriously i'll just ease the booze intake and find something else to do, like getting a girlfriend!

I'd be an alky if I supported Motherwell FC. Nah, sounds like you just are having a heavy drinking phase. Alky's down 4 diamond white first thing in the morning sorta style. Switch to Buckfast.

I don't support Motherwell, in fact i don't support anyone (not really a football fan except for footy management games on the PC). And as for buckfast and diamond white.....bleugh!!

I had 2 days off the beer, and on my day off I drank a few, after about 5 or 6 I realised I just wasn't enjoying them anymore and switched to coke, then water, then went to bed.

I've switched my sleeping hours again though and that possibly has something to do with it, cos for the last 3 days I've actually slept more than 4 or 5 hours in one go.

Got up at half 7 last night, and I felt like crap, couldn't work out if it was the beer that had done it or just not used to sleeping for a reasonable amount anymore?

May hoy a couple of cans down my neck before I go to bed this morning though (I work nights remember so I'm technically not AM drinking :D).

Almost right, your body wakes you up because it needs more booze

Now don't take this the wrong way as I'm honestly not taking the piss, but I have/had the same problem with tea.
Times when I was between contracts and didn't have a gf, stuck indoors, even on most Sundays, I'd be chain drinking tea. If I had nothing occupying me like a decent game or something to focus on that I was actually interested in, I'd get restless, crave a cup of tea and have to put the kettle on. And even if I'd just finished or was still halfway through a cup, if my brain wasn't engaged with something I'd feel the urge to brew up again.
I drink a lot less tea now but the craving still appears when I'm bored. It's the reason I pay 90p for a cuppa at work even though there's a kitchen and I could bring my own, because the cost discourages me from having more than one or two a day.
Since October I've had a gf again and got a X360, both of which have kept me more occupied with the joy of new things and going outside, and I'm drinking far less tea. Conversely, I recently had a weekday off and didn't feel like playing games. Ended up drinking loads. I wouldn't even say I find things particularly addictive in general. I don't do any drugs and I don't keep alcohol in the house apart from for cooking.
As people have said above, you need some sort of substitute to break your behaviour if you think it's a problem.

I think i'm getting more addicted to Civ 4. Played it until 2am last night.
Great game, and safer than booze.

    Dr. Pepper for me :D

I've always found that I like some pop every now and then but I mostly drink "The Pep", I've got into a habit now, at work I go and get one at midnight, then at 1AM on my first break I have another can, then my munch break and final break I usually have something without caffiene so I'm not all buzzed up when I get home from work.

But the other night I decided to drink a Powerade zero, and water, as for some reason I've been feeling really dehydrated recently. I lasted until the first break and I had to have a Dr. Pepper. I was feeling really run down and crap until after my first break, after I'd started downing a can of Pepper my shakes (yes I said Shakes!) subsided and I started to feel a lot more like myself again. I don't know if I'm hooked on the caffiene the sugar or a combo of both.

I'm off work tonight I've been up fro just under 6 hours and I've had 3 cans of it so far, I think I need to balance it out with some booze or something

maybe i am addicted to coca-cola and coffee, but I'm not drinking alcohol now, so I don't care, however bad for me pop is, it's not messing me up as much as booze! I'm not going to stop drinking it.

Great news - I remember well what happened a few months back and it's good to see you've swapped it for far lesser evils.

I used to have a can of something every day. Last year's 4 ?176 spent at the dentist put paid to that plan and I've managed to cut a lot of unnecessary sugar out of my diet in addition. Would prefer to keep my teeth a bit longer than 30 years, not matter how much I love sweets.

With all that caffine inside you, don't you get a lot of headaches?

Ugh! Bloody ice hockey pucks. I can't stomach those. You're probably better off with bananas, they're not quite as cheap but nutritionally better and just as filling. Contain lots of potassium which is good for regulating your blood pressure and water levels.

you only need lunch and tea. you will only get fat if you snack. a moment on the lips, forever on the hips.

its like when you feed a dog, if you give him his dinner at 5 oclock he will always get hungry around that time. so if you snack all day your body will expect food so will send false hunger signals to your tummy.

the best way to ween your self off snacking is to eat milky ways as they don't spoil your appetite, so in theory you can eat as many as you like.
