i haven't done anything as complicated as a human, so no ear practice just yet. i've heard bums are difficult as well?

Hah, I haven't modelled a bum yet in 3d myself, but I imagine it will be a pain in the arse.

it's all about good reference images. i should have a stack of them some where.

Some very impressive stuff there guys. Someone once told me that when 3D human eyes start looking real, everything will change.

I know nothing about 3d modeling. but my cousin does. He started with VU-3D, then Swivel 3D, Ray Dream Designer, Strata Studio Pro and finally Cinema 4D. He now develops his own plug-ins, uses Coffee a lot and has some images in his portfolio that still impress me today as much as they did a few years ago.

    One example is here:

i agree, very good. this one is excellent even though it was done in radiosity. i always found it difficult to get good lighting using it. i found finalrender0 much better and it used to crash all the time.

ive managed to import a box into my game from blender. a 3d box at that.

added to my 3 environment its looking quite good atm.

gonna see about making it fly now.

well got my model flying. managed to knock up a little model in blender, which ended up looking like thunderbird one. (a few boxes, a cylander and a cone)

it is very overwhelming, but with a guide it turned out not to be so bad, it seems to be all about the keyboard short cuts.

as for the game its pretty shit atm. am trying to get the flying sorted out, turns out xna doesn't have any physics built it. so for instance, you can put gravity by saying a it will move down the y axis whe it needs to. buuuuut a plane doesn't do that. the only flight sim ive played written in xna has this problem, in that if you drop the thrust to zero, your plane just drops like a rock, when in reality it would glide.

so i might try to add gravity to the model in incriments as it pitches downwards. although i can't imagine that will be easy to work out.

also need to put some air resistance in there too as its rolling far too easily.

i imported this into blender. i left it as separate objects assuming you can group them. i get dizzy after trying to use blender for more than 5 minutes.

cheers fella, i tried importing the file you gave me before into blender, which it reckoned it could do because it had a setting for 3ds files, but for some reason it didn't work.

this one should do it though. ;)

Thanks for starting this thread mile id always wanted to try modeling 3d stuff but never realised there was a free software package. So far i must say blender is a bit of a bast to use, im working through the snowman tutorial but my spheres keep vanishing.

lol, thats the tut i am going through too. (i think it links from the package though)

yeah it seems a bit overwhelming, but for free thats quite good i suppose.

if it's not there in the render, have you made sure the camera and lamp are postitioned correctly? i made that mistake.

the camera is the triangle looking thing on the work screen, and the lamp is the circle thing.

You mean those things that look like scribles. Ive got the two spheres done now and joined them up im trying to do the cone now, but the tutorial isnt making much sense i need to select the base of the cone.

along with the manual these videos should be of help. i downloaded the first one out of 'getting started' and i think it's the way to learn a piece of software. i find reading a book and then looking at a screen is disorientating.
that bi-wing plane is quite crude, but i found it fun to trick around with.
my first attempt and here was a later go at doing a sequence. when you get far enough to start doing simple animations then it gets fun.

Cheers freddy im downloading the vid now, i have been refering to the manual and its quite helpful. The only problem with its as with all manuals it tells you how to do stuff but not how to get out of the poop when it all goes wrong.

    you'll always find yourself in poo even when you know (or think you know) what you are doing. there are 3 major areas with 3d and they are;
    • modelling
    • materials
    • animation
there is a lot to know in each and while different from each other they all tie in as well. rendering is getting quite complex as well especially since global illumination got started.
