Worst modern games

edited February 2010 in Chit chat
Anything that you've recently played, not retro, that you think, "ugh this is awful!" ?

For me there's plenty to choose from but here we go, the worst I've seen so far...

(warning: contains scathing remarks!)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Xbox 360 - blocky and jerky as hell, even with HD They released it looking like that?!

Test Drive Unlimited Xbox 360 - TD 4,5,6 and 7 were excellent. It's certainly gone wrong here! Handling is nowhere near as smooth and it makes all the same mistakes as NFS Underground. No, No, No!

Grand theft Auto IV Xbox 360 - I think I'm gonna hurl - Daft plot, pointless missions, no-fun driving. And I thought Vice City was bad! :D

Oh, and there was a launch title with a futuristic tank with big spiky wheels for the 360. That was terrible, as in they spent so much time with pretty wheels, they forgot to include a game.

Every single Wii game - not found a good one yet.

I disagree with that statement. I found Paper Mario to be pretty good on the Wii. Nothing brand new about it but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

I will beg to differ there, there are some excellent games for it, including Resident Evil 4 and House of the Dead.

MW2 blocky? Check your settings. Mine was nice and smooth.

Bayonetta - I just don't get it. Everyone's drooling all over it and it's the best thing in the world, here's me playing the demo with eyes glazing over, thinking it's not as good as Ninja Gaiden on XBox.

Yeah, it's not hard to find good Wii games. At least I've managed to round up thirty odd without buying any duffers.

Mind you, I've rented a few downright awful ones:

Ashes Cricket - The graphics look antiquated and the motion controls are utterly counter-intuitive and unreliable into the bargain. I've had more fun with CRL's Test Match and I'd have to say I was a bit shocked to see something quite so poor on the market in this day and age.

Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince - Three crap minigames repeated ad nauseam interspersed with bad voice acting. Film tie-ins are just as bad as ever, it seems.

Cooking Mama - A nice game for the DS, perhaps, but an ill-considered port to the Wii. Terrible controls and tedious gameplay. At least the voice acting is mildly entertaining in this one, although that's not enough to save it.

Vancouver 2010 on the 360 - utterly boring , most of the events are way too samey and long , lacks variety and its bland bland bland.

is this were we attack popular games that we don't like.

I'm kind of disappointed with my Wii, Wii Sports seems to have ended up being the game that gets the most play, and it's mostly the missus that plays it.

Dead Rising: Chop til' you drop was quite fun, but I only played through it twice and can't be arsed to do any of the stupid mini games you unlock, they're ridiculously hard or silly, and I got bored after I did about 5 of them. Still a good game but flawed and short lived.

Rygar: Still need to finish it, it was pretty easy all the way through then I realised the last boss is impossible without about 4 million health items which I don't have. I lost interest in trying to finish it after I died for about the 200 billionth time from a cheap trick that the boss does that's undodgable and unblockable. Can't be bothered to play through it again and hoard health items until I get there again. Probably a one I'll never play again once I have finished it.

House of the Dead 2 and 3 Return: The one game I've bought that I don't have anything bad to say about. There's not a great deal of extras, but I got 2 quality arcade shooters for $19.95 on 1 disc. Can't complain really, even though HotD2 seems much harder on the Wii than it did on the Dreamcast.

All the decent looking games still cost a fortune even used, I'm not paying $35 for used game when the new one is only between $5 and $10 more expensive, and I'm not willing to fork out that much money for something I might not like. Most shops try to stiff you if you take it back not long after buying it cos' it's shit, by offering you trade prices for it instead of a refund.

All the shite is about $15, you can tell the crud that nobody wants when there's 10 copies of it on the shelf and they're all $15.

I also have absolutely no desire to play anything with Mario or Donkey Kong or Kirby or any other cutesy Nintendo mascot in it.

I guess I'll wait a little longer until the prices come down although typically by then since it's a Nintendo console all the good games will be extinct from the shelves and never find their way back there.

Friggin' hardcore Nintendians buy up all the good stuff!

But all in all I'm really beginning to wish I'd waited a month or so and got a PS3 or 360 instead. My Wii appears to be a waste of money so far

the first "new" wolfenstein was a good game... haven't tried the new one but don't think I will...

as for "modern games" I've been downloading some demo's for the PS3, I find that most of them are crap, but I was really astonished on how bad IRONMAN was... don't know what the finished version looked like, but the demo is a real pile of ________

don't understand how people still make "big budget" games that can suck that much...

Been playing it straight for about 10hrs. Wipeout HD as well! Bloody great! Highly recommend the old sony box o' tricks after a shaky start :)

I'm gonna go for Call Of Duty: World At War... my mates played it almost constantly online with the PS3, and I just couldn't see what the fuss was all about.

Erm, and any of the Halo games... I just don't get why people are so mad about them.

I liked Saint's Row for all of a week, and then realised how cack it was... I haven't played the sequel, whenever I see it in shops I just think of how pants the original was and step away from it!! Nothing does GTA better than GTA itself.

Well if you will buy shit games, clearly you're not going to enjoy them!

There's a reason that Mario Galaxy sells a load - because it's a bloody good game! Twilight Princess is great, but you have to like that sort of thing. Resident Evil 4 is an absolutely amazing game with the Wii controls. Tatsunoku vs Capcom is an awesome beat-em-up. But Sonic Unleashed is still shit whatever platform it's on.

Well, you can't say that I didn't warn you about Dead Rising. Rygar isn't something that I've played, but then again I was never much of a fan of the original and the reviews for it haven't exactly been stellar.

As far as HotD goes, you've really got to give Overkill a go before you see what the Wii can really do with a rail shooter. It costs under ?8 from Game now, even in rip-off Britain, so I'd be shocked if you couldn't get your hand on a copy for as many dollars where you are. Dead Space Extraction, Resi Umbrella Chronicles and Ghost Squad are also pretty good in the same vein and can be had second hand for not too much.

I'm surprised you're having trouble picking up cheap second hand games in general as pretty much anything except some first party titles can be had on eBay for a tenner when it's six months old here. I've even got seven very good games for under a fiver: Metroid Prime 3, No More Heroes, Bully, Pikmin, Geometry Wars Galaxies, Zack & Wiki and a copy of Madworld that was still sealed. There are bargains out there, so keep looking.

That said, you probably did pick the wrong machine if you don't want cutesy games. There's a smattering of tempting exclusives for the Wii in the ultraviolence department, especially if you've got a thing for rail shooters, but most of those are relatively short and insubstantial.

Still, if you can swallow your indignation, I would heartily recommend the likes of Super Paper Mario and Little Kings Story. Beneath their cute exteriors, both are seriously hardcore, and quite innovative, games that ought to keep you busy for the thick end of forty hours before you finish them.

My point is there's very few games no matter where I look that seem appealing, and what does look appealing generally costs too much to risk buying on a whim.

I've almost bought REmake brand new a few times because it's only $29.99. I may still do that, as I know for a fact I like Resi Evil 1. As for resi-4 I've played the PS2 version to death so the Wii version is a low priority at the mo' but that is one decent game that fits into the $15 catergory. It's surprisingly cheap every time I see it, and I really wanted the new Silent Hill but I'm almost scared to buy it, the game sounds like it plays so differently from the others that if it's crap I'll have pissed almost $50 away.

It's pay day though and my tax return should turn up tommorow as well, so I'll have a little spare coinage. I may just go and purchase some games that aren't "Shit" to see if I can change my mind about my Nintendo dust magnet ;)

Youve named four games there and for a systen thats been around as long as the wii its not very good. Unfortunatley in woooing third party support for the wii something wich was lacking for the gamecube theyve opend theflood gates for dross a bit like the gba and ds.

Erm, that's exactly what I think of Need For Speed and all the similar "pimp my ride and then drive at completely unrealistic speeds" games... at least Gran Turismo had (extremely) realistic handling and none of that nonsense of tarting cars up (you altered cars to make them perfrom better, not look nicer).

For a realistic type game its good but just for yearsssss i prefer the 'arcadey' style of racing game where you dont blow up if you hit something and if anything bounce of it or lose a bit of speed !

Assasins Creed 1 (PS3) - Very, very boring after about 2 hours. AC 2 is much better but still gets a tad tiresome after a while.

Colin McRae Dirt 1 (PS3) - Pointless multiplayer and far too samey.

Heavenly Sword (PS3) - Looks great, just a bit meh!

I dont tend to have too many crap games these days I try to do as much research as possible before buying a game. ?40 is ?40 and I dont wont to spend it on something that's crap.

... and instead have the car flip over as soon as you touch something, like in Outrun!! :p
