Help needed prior to next vault update

edited July 2004 in MIA/STP/SDP
Hi everyone....

The next vault update is not too far away, however, I've managed to source 9 unlisted titles, 11 titles which are MIA and a further 10 STP titles which seem to be pretty scarce.... If possible, I'd like to acquire these and get them quickly dumped and add include them when the vault is next updated...

However, my funds are running very very low at the moment, if anyone would like to donate (No matter how small the amount), or even purchase CD/DVD's, this will help me acquire these titles before they are snapped up by someone else who may not be as sympathetic to the preservation teams cause...

Thanks, Steve

The appeal hasn't been out long, and already a fantastic contribution has been made by Matthew Wilson, I think this will cover about 1/3 to 1/2 of the titles located. Thanks again Matthew...

However more is needed obviously, so if you want the next vault update to be even better than it's currently standing, please buy a WIP tzx vault CD or make a donation...

Just to wet your appetite, the total number of new titles is currently standing at about 350, this includes about half a dozen Vic 20 and Amstrad dumps, about 20 C64 TAP images, the rest is Spectrum stuff.... There's still more to add, including over 140 +D/MGT disk images and a few more late submissions...

    Fantasic news Steve !!

Let me just reitterate that we have spent an enormous amount of our own personal money and regrettably cannot afford to continue with the same driving force that we have in the last few years. There's just too many other factors that mean cutting back on retro spending (like families to feed) :o.
So all your donations are gratefully recieved, no matter how big or small, by way of money, unwanted software and hardware.

    Cheers

There's been another two donations, many many thanks to Christpher Thomson and Jon Needle of Spectaculator fame, we're getting there....

The good news is that the titles have been put to one side, so they're secure, just a question of when they can be purchased and dumped.

    Steve
PS Jon, I've now checked/sorted out the new disk images with the latest beta, everything looks fine!

Great, looking forward to the CD.

Not got many Plus D titles to test here , although Geoff Wearmouth's borrowed me a whole stack of Outlet magazines (thanks Geoff!)

Once I've finished my device driver, I'll be converting these with it.

    Jon.

The good thing about +D/Disciple and Opus Discovery disks is that you don't need special hardware like you do for +3 disks !.

So it should be easier to pursuade folks to dump their disks. It's been a tought running for +3 disks.

Wonder how many commercial disks here actually released ?:

I'll update these pages as we go along.

I don't think we want them in EDSK format (according to those pages!) ;)

  • edited July 2004
    Yes, paypal to:- Gilby6@btinternet.com

I've just calculated we're at the 50% mark after the 3 generous contributions received so far... The total for the 30 titles is ?120, making an average of ?4 per title. As you can see, it's not cheap to source titles for the MIA and STP projects, so contributions are still needed please.... :) This would bring the total for the upcoming update to 300+ titles...

Yep Jon, they're WIP pages :o. I haven't linked them to the SDP pages yet cos I need to update this info :).

We don't know if any fancy copy protections were used like with +3 disks.

Yep, there's also paypal and nochecx links on the STP/SDP pages, but the funds go to me rather than Steve :), though it all goes to preservation.

Eye, costs between ?5~?10 for a +3 disk, and it's bloody annoying to have bought one and find it's corrupt. On average I have to source 2-3 disks to get a SDP release. It's been very slow for SDP and either people don't have the disks or are VERY reluctant to loan me them ?

Many thanks to all for donations, present and past !!!!!

    Best wishes

    Thank you very much !!!

Seriously though, hypothetically, if each of our visitors donated just ?1 or something we'd be able to resolve so many titles.

I believe the current source material we have our eyes on totals way over ?1,000.... yep that's right !!!

Remeber, even information to refine infoseek or to be able to dispel a MIA cos it wasn't released all helps.

Many thanks for your enthusiasm, it keeps us plodding on, there have been times when we've though, "gawd, how much longeer can we keep this up?", I'm talking mentally, physically and financially :o.

    Best wishes

Yeah, I was having serious thoughts myself recently about reigning in on my expenditure on the tzx project. As well as buying stuff for my collection, I was buying stuff I had no interest in, just so the titles could get resolved... And the amount of money spent in total just keeps piling up :(

The number of titles unresolved still is truly colossal (1700+) and there are bound to be many many titles which are still unknown and unlisted. Thanks to the four recent donations I'm 50% towards buying the 30 titles I've sourced and reserved... As Andy said, if more people could contribute just a quid or so, then the vault updates would be bigger and more frequent I'm sure.

At the moment, there are loads of titles out there that could be purchased if more funds were available, it just takes longer when you have to wait till pay day to acquire them!!!

Im sorry but I dont have a bank account, nor any friends or family with a credit card so paypal is out of the question.

The line where you said about if everyone paid just one pound brings the truth home pretty quickly... it`s that apathy thing with people just not being arsed enough :(

I used to pay for things all the time with postal orders... would that do - don`t worry, it wouldn`t be for only a pound :)

    Keep up the great work.

    Woohoo!

Confusion and Tron by Blaby sourced so that's only Defender to get then Blaby is completed... As you can see though, the scarce tapes fetch quite a bit, so please donate if you're considering it and help preserve some long lost gems...

  • edited July 2004
these are for our/your own collection though so i personally don't think donations should be spent on these items. it would be better to spend money from donations on titles that no one wants for their own collections (and therefore would remain un-bought) and then re-sell them?

would this increase the amount people donate?

The donations WERE NOT used to buy these tapes! I specifically stated that they were for the tapes I'd sourced 30 in total that I wasn;t particularly interested in from a collecting point of view.

er, i'm not getting the hump and i misunderstood your post (apologies). i am however voicing something that was mentioned to me when i pointed a couple of people to the TZX Vault CD. They wanted to know what titles were purchased with donations, I said MIA/STP and they wanted some examples and i couldn't give them any..thats all..they also wanted to know what happened to titles paid for with donations, whether they were re-sold (and the money put back in, although we all know the poor re-sale value of spectrum titles) or we/you kept them or if they were given to the person who made the donation!...again i said i didn't know..

so my only point was that in order to get more people to donate then maybe there should be some sort of official line/process/indication of tapes bought by donation..maybe it won't make any difference and we will still have to beg...just a thought to try and make the donation thing more appealing..

    what do people think?

thats all, i didn't bid on the blaby titles, maybe we are all on different sides!

    cheers

Aye, I suppose something along those lines is possible, but it's more work for me...

There has been a recent spate of auctions where I tried to offload some stuff, but it's more work than it's worth I think, loads of titles don't even get any interest at 50p. I'm in the process of binning loads of dups cos I can't be arsed to flog them for buttons or put all the time of listing them, being charged them getting nothing to show for it.

  • edited July 2004
you could always send *me* your dupes list ;)

and you are of course correct, more work for you mate, i know, i guess it might depend on the size of donation, but what we DO need to sort out is how we are going to purchase tapes that none of the preservation team want for there own collections, but that need dumping...none of us can afford to collect what we do want and still afford to pay for what we don't especially since the re-sale value is so small....

Yes, I need most of these as well.

If a lot like this came up for auction I am sure it would bring a good price. Dave and myself would be bidding against each other for starters.

I think most serious collectors end up buying single tapes or small lots to get single tapes we want as its more or less impossable to find a lot with more than a couple of titles you haven't already got. A single lot like the above would have every serious collector bidding because of the proportion of hard to find titles.

If this lot came up I might even sell one of my rarer tapes to finance the purchase. :)

As for dupes not selling, selling 1 title at a time, always brings in the most money, but try selling the lot in one go.

Or Pick this Many is cool as well.

Yep, it's a nightmare shifting dupes or unwanted titles.

I took advantage of that free listing day as well as the previous free PayPal (which I don't recall them paying into my account !!! hmm...).
I listed most titles at a mere 15p~25p and I only sold a handful out of 60 tapes. It took me a while to photo, list, calculate p&p and of course test the tape (I do this for all my auctions where possible). I usually buy SDP and STP items, but the STP items aren't usually sort after and their resale value isn't worth the hassle :(. I keep all SDP disks I buy but resell duplicates as I often need to source more than one disk to be sure I get a good dump (so to speak). I keep 'em just in case a redump is in order, but I've also decided to collect them. I do have the intention to get rid of anything that I have on on tape that I have the disk version of. I also wanna get rid of some of my big box games cos they take up so much space and the missus is hassling me about it... bairns need the rooms for bedrooms etc :).

I've bought stuff from the retro sellers for ?5+ just to resolve some titles, the won't budge on discounts or loans or anything (but who can blame them ?), but the stinger is when you try and resell them, to get a measly 50p or something :(, what I'm trying to say is that we generally keep the titles and use them to trade.

I have a few titles I can't sell, but I've now got a few machines I can probably flog with a bundle of tapes to get rid of them.

    Regards

    Andy
