Sarsaparilla

edited March 2010 in Chit chat
Anyone know where I can get some? It was very easy to find in London as it's a carabien drink, but up here in North Yorkshire it's like gold dust. I've searched all over the place and I've even lookded around York and Leeds, but nothing :( I've even looked on the big supermarket websites, but they don't list it. (I never checked Tesco's as they want me to regester first and I'm not doing that just to find that they don't stock it either!)

A quick Google search shows that it's also popular in China, but is called "Sarsi" over there. A quick visit to my local Chinese supermarket proved flat too :( But, I did discover the wonders of Wasabi Peas :)

If it's the stuff I'm thinking of it tastes like Dandelion and Burdock.

I have heard it called Sarsasperella as well, perhaps a search on that may yield results. It used to be very popular up North when my mother was young, about 80 years ago.
Every time I read that the oldest person in the world has died, I have to do a quick check to see it isn't ME..........

Dandelion and Burdock drink is made from the roots of these plants, I saw that Hugh "I'll eat anything" floppy wotsit make it on one of his shows.
Just wondering if its the same thing.

Wasabi peas are nice, but try ASDA. They do a bag called 'Wasabi Mix' that has peas, peanuts, and chilli rice crackers all mixed together.

As for sarsaparilla, try searching online for sarsaparilla cordial instead.

Pubs that don't sell booze? That's a bit rubbish!

The McD root beer used to taste a bit like something a Dentist would use.

It sometimes can taste a little bit like D&B, but normally has a taste of it's own. There used to be a market stall down "The Lane" when I was a kid that sold it hot during the winter and ice cold during the summer (they even had a huge block of ice hanging above the mix, dripping into it all day long. Probably could't get away with that these days) and it was sold in pints of halfs.

One site that I looked at said that it's also very popular "down under" and they say that most pubs sell it. If pubs here sold it, I can honestly say that I'd never drink beer again :D

I found a couple of close-ish stockists and I'll have a nosey if I pass them, but that brand seems to be very expensive. I could get 2L of it for about ?3 in London, but these are ?4 for half a litre. Oh well, it'll be better than nothing ;)

I'm no fan of Musicals, but in Calamity Jane, she says "Make mine a sasparilla'..always stuck with me. Anyhoo, I've had a can of the stuff I remember, but it was just fake juice...a bit like Barr's Cherryade I am drinking now.
I stole it off a space ship.

I used to hear 'Zarzaparrilla' (spanish for sarsaparilla) in old western films, where hard guys got in the saloon and ask for one. That's the reason I've always supposed it's a very hard drink, like tequila or bourbon, only for rude men...

... but I've come across 'sarsaparrilla' in some tea or medicinal shops. It seems it cures headaches, helps kidneys to expel water from the body, helps to lose weight...

I can't imagine John Wayne drinking sarsaparrilla to lose weight...
