Well, almost... there's an Egg Stores in Stoke Newington. Quite a famous and long-standing olde-worlde supermarket, I do believe:

Wow, that looks so 1960s :-)

The only thing that gives it away is the girls in the corner and their modern pushchair/pram type thing.

That reminds me about Clarkes, however it's spelt.

Anyone know if they're still going.

    Yeah, they're still going.

And really, Dixons should be taken off the list. there are still Dixons stores in Airports (as Dixons Tax Free), and it really was just a name change to Currys Digital in the high street. Nothing else changed apart from that.

There is a Wimpey here in Maidstone too. They are franchises now. Their 1/4 pounders are lovely! odd if you're eating in to be served on a plate with a knife and fork though. They used to be the McDonalds of Britain!

They gave you vinegar as well as salt for your fries as well, they were almost chips :D

Yeah, almost being the operative word :D

Us British didn't know what hit us before Wimpy, before that we could be found in places called cafes that smelt of fried eggs, they served tea in huge cracked mugs with lipstick on them from the previous user, or maybe an Italian Ice Cream Parlour that also served frothy coffee. But we never looked back after those wimpy burgers and banana long boats, I remember that going out for a Pizza Hut was considered quite sophisticated in the early 80's :D

yeah but they rent dvd's these days.

I should imagine unless they diversify quickly they won't be around soon.

I'm guessing everything rental will go to streaming before long.

One of those stinky old coffee shops that used to be trendy in 1982 still exists on Shields Road in Newcastle, it's actually just called the Coffee and Cream.....although hang on maybe it's a Jamaican Cafe now? Or was that down the road a little from it?

I think it's still there anyway?

It was one of those places full of dole waller wives, and old dears, but they used to do a mean orange pop back when I was about 5 years old

Silica - Amiga/ST shop. They had a few around the UK.
Benjys - Cheapo sandwich shop dotted all over London a while back.
Somerfield - Did the Co-op keep any of the store names? (if they did, it wont be long)
    Portsmouth Club Shop
    Post Office - Remember them?

Still loads of Garfunkels [Wimpys/Clarkes] about in London.

Presto was bought by Safeway who in turn were bought by Morrisons.

Still a Dixons in Gatwick - But would very much recommend checking out electrical goods on their online presence www.dixons.co.uk. I've seen a load of stuff cheaper there than the usual online suspects.

    My two-penneth.

Kwik Save wunt TU a while back, absorbed into Somerfield (which in turn became Co-op).

There used to be a burger place called Hucklkeberrys, pre McMildreds about 1982ish. Not sure if that was local or a chain.

Hill House Hammond Insurance went about 5? years ago

    Bejams?

Somerfields are still around, but their own brand stuff is all Co-op.

And a lot poorer for it. It may be more ethical or whatever, but tastes blander.

Aye, there's one not too far from me too, and it is more of a cafe/diner kinda place now.

What happened to Wendy Burger? Is that still about?

    Bristol and West? (Building Society)
Mr Mint? (keys shoe repairs etc)
Peter Lord? (Proudly sold of Clarks shoes)

    Remember Peter Lords?
In the 80's is was the in place for mums to get school shoes for their kids. In there you used to able to buy left and right shoes in different sizes. They made a pint of measuring both feet with this electric contraption that looked like is was gunna chop your foot off.

Wimpy Bars were a franchise operation from the beginning, long before franchising became big business. There was a huge story in 1975, when the newspapers reckoned that Wimpy had gone bust; they hadn't, it was their main franchisee which had gone bust. 3 out of every 4 Wimpy Bars closed as a result.

    There are a few which shouldn't really be on the list;
    • Virgin Records/Megastores: became Zavvi, so that's one entry, not two/three
    • [strike]Nocash[/strike] Northern Rock: still going (not strong), just not such a rock anymore
    • Bejam: became Iceland aaaaaages ago
    • Somerfields: still going (for now), there's one in Camberwell Green
    • Timothy Whites: absorbed by Boots about 25 years ago. :p The Two Ronnies even did a gag referencing this.
    • Dixons: rationalised their branding, so the former Currys website was absorbed into the Dixons one and, conversly, all Dixons stores (with perhaps a few exceptions) were renamed Currys. So now it's Dixons=online, Currys=high street.

So that Wankipedia page is also partly wrong (oh, what a surprise...).

They came to the UK, left, came back... and I think they've left again. :( They did a lovely chili con carne (not too hot) as well...
