Anaconda - Sad news

edited April 2010 in MIA/STP/SDP
I'm a bit gutted as I type this, but it looks like Anaconda is unrecoverable at the moment, unless we get a lucky break with the Beta disks and Microdrive carts...

In a nutshell, I've spent the last two days working every hour god sends sampling and
re-sampling the tapes in an effort to preserve the game.

I've managed to recover the level data for both the 48k and 128k flavours of the game, which is saved at 146% speed, a bit like some of the Speedlock schemes. I've checked the batch of tapes in the auction lot and only the 128k loader tape is present, which is physically damaged. As things stand, it looks like there's no way it can be saved.

I'm gonna have a good drink tonight with some work colleagues, bit of a late 40th birthday do, but I'll be back on the case tomorrow.

If there are any further developments, I'll post them here.

It's not all doom and gloom as there are some WIP versions of The Master which I'm busy working on, but bad news indeed about Anaconda.

Well just maybe their is a way of combining whats on the microdrive carts with that of the tapes to get a working copy. For instance, if the turbo loader was removed from what works on the tape, then maybe it can be combined with what is on the microdrive carts to make a working copy. Downside though is that it would mean the tape would not be considered "pure" for the WOS archives, but it would mean using this method it maybe could be fixed. Must be frustrating though.

Let's hope the Beta disks / microdrive carts are in better condition (fingers crossed).

Well, it's sad to hear that, but I hope there is some way to recover this game.

There are some magicians among us, who can restore badly damaged tapes. See that thread for example :

Maybe they could give some help.

Well, as far as I remember the auction included a picture of the game loaded on a Speccy, so this seems a bit strange as it seemed to work just fine a few weeks ago.

Is the an April Fools' Day post? ;)

I'm guessing it's an April Fool, too.

Bit of a strange April Fool if that's the case, as it's not funny or shocking, just disappointing.

BUT! I could not get them to load fully. I do not have an old style tape recorder... and only had a stereo 'ghetto blaster' so I managed to get the game loaded as below...

128k tape loader works.. main program tape loads past the screen dump... then nothing more

48k tape loader works.. part1 program loads... get keyboard/ joystick selection and music... prepares to load part2 but cant get it further than that.

So it was never advertised as working fully but this doesn't appear to be the same issues as Steve reports.
