HD Freeview

How do I get it? I've got an HD telly, it's got built-in freeview... So why won't it accept the new freeview HD channels (BBC1-50, ITV-51, Channel 4-52)

I want them!

Well you can't get freeview HD because their are no channels on freeview that are broadcasting in hd yet.

However, their is an upcomming ITV channel that is shortly being launched which I recall will be broadcasting in hd. Details here:

Your TV probably isn't capable of showing the Freeview HD channels, due to a different compression system used to normal Freeview. You'll need one of the new HD settop boxes to see it.

Some of the new 2010 range of TV's will have this built in.

    That isn't quite true.

Several areas are broadcasting BBC HD, C4 HD and ITV HD over Freeview. I just set it up on a family member's TV a couple of days ago... they're a few miles away from us in a different TV area and have had it available since late last year. We don't get it until April.

If a retuning (using expanded range if available as an option) doesn't add the channels for you then your TV/box either isn't capable of picking them up or your area doesn't yet have the HD channels.

    Use...

I'm waiting for Sky to reduce their prices for HD.

Sky have done a ton for sport in this country but at the same time theyre also taking the mick a lot (Trying to increase prices, putting Pacific/Clone Wars on a movie channel).

Just dont want to give them anymore of my money. Seen deals where you now get the HD box for free and its just a cost for the HD channels, tempting but again its another cost.

Plus i would lose all the progs on my current Sky+ box which i want to keep !

Virgin seem to be getting their act together with HD to. There is now around 14 HD channels on there, plus all the 'on demand' stuff too. And it's free to all XL TV customers too. I hear more will appear on there soon.

i really don't like sky, everytime a show gets a little bit of popularity money bags murdoch gets his wallet out.

they showed a bunch of episodes of shows on freeview the other day. the first episode of 'pacific' 'V' 'dexter' but you then have to buy sky to watch the rest. thats why i never bothered watching 'prisoner' as if it gets popular sky will just buy it.

i much prefer downloading these series for free off the net, as i have a tv license and im not paying twice!!

Well Prisoner is only about 6 episodes and is only one season long so dont worry !

I know what you mean, Sky buys up the popular shows BUT they do show it much sooner. Previously Lost etc were months behind the US but now its days.

Plus the fact that the V+ box is HD by default, so you don't have to pay an extra tenner per month for HD like you do with Sky (or did the last time I looked a couple of years ago). Also the iPlayer stuff through Virgin offers some programs in HD (presumably Sky does too). I watched a couple of episodes of Wonders of the Solar System on it the other week - awesome.

I think the full XL package from Virgin is a pretty good deal. Ours is about 70 quid per month and I get a deal on the phones which I'm not interested in, 50Mb broadband, and most of the TV channels excluding Sky Movies and Sports. But as you get ESPN with the XL package I get as much footie for nothing as I would with a Sky Sports subscription anyways!

Okie dokie! :) Thanks peeps - had a check, and Sussex won't get the HD channels until the switchover in 2012. Ah well, Bognor will probably be underwater by then!
