Kick Off 2 Tournament

edited May 2010 in Chit chat
Hi guys

Hope you don't mind me posting this on the forum but I'd like to make you aware of a Retro Computer Gaming Tournament - in particular Kick Off 2 - that's taking place on 22nd May 2010.

The games are played on Amiga's and so I appreciate that this is a Spectrum forum but I suppose we'r all on the same wave length and that's prolonging the dreams and memories of the classic systems.

Even if you'v never touched the game before then it's not too late as we want to make this a real newbie friendly tournament. One idea being bandied about is to get more than one person to attend from a particular forum and then we will then total up their points and the winning forum gets a trophy!

Here some info on previous tournaments:
UK Champs 2008 - http://ko-gathering.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=15575
UK Champs 2009 - http://ko-gathering.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=15580

and info on this years: http://ko-gathering.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=15899

Or please post in this thread to signal your interest. Be great if people would be willing to make the leap.

Used to skive off college to play this multiplayer with a mate in the early 90's. Bet it's incredibly difficult to play nowadays - it wasn't easy back then...

Played this game tons in the day, havent though for about 15 years or so ! Nice idea. I would worry theres too many 'super players' who might enter !

E.g i used to think i was superb at Madden, played online and every little american kid knew every AI busting play and i would lose 63-0 nearly every time.

Can just imagine there'll be some grandmasters practicing non stop for Kick off 2 !

there are no words that can express the frustration this game gave me... I spent more time drawing equipments than actually playing...

Cheers for the replies guys! I picked it up again a few years ago and felt I wasnt too bad...and then you play against some players and it's a case of wtf?

Which is why we'r going to be getting lots of new guys to enter this UK Champs. What usually happens is players turn up...get turned over and feel reluctant to come again. But the more new players we get, the more closer games there will be and who knows...maybe, just maybe you'l be a top player and not even know it! :)

A player in Norway joined about a year and a half ago and he got to the world cup final! But when attending tournies like this, if you do get turned over it's great to speak with people and get tips...I know at recent Birmingham tournaments we all talk about what tactics work best, what goals you have more chance of scoring from various areas and angles...of course it's difficult to put it into practice!

Maybe we can have a cup competition just for new players...I fully recommend this event guys :) (then again i would say that hehe)

    Hi Fellas,

First post, big KO2 fan but the spectrum is where it all started for me! 8)

Steve and I are putting things together for this extra special 20th anniversary UK gathering of Kick Off fans and we definately welcome newcomers. :) In fact, I first took the plunge myself at the UK Champs '06 in Manchester after having not played since '93! Sure you get your top players attending these things but for most of us, it's about getting together and having a laugh with like-minded people who share an affection for Kick Off 2 and gaming generally.

Don't be put off by having not played for years. No way! We've got two guys who come back each year who don't even play in between - they just come for the crack and the love of the game! There's always a real range of players, and that's exactly as it should be.

Looking back I wish I knew a few of the tricks that I know now. Kick Off 2 seemed so much harder back in the day - not that I'm brilliant now by any stretch. I'm a steady-eddy, mid-table kinda player, taking the long-view and enjoying the ride!

If you're in need of a few pointers, take a look at this. Not so long ago, a guy called Dagh from Denmark, put together this GOAL TUTORIAL. Imo Dagh's a bit of KO2 legend but shows us mere mortals the way to go!

If you've enjoyed Kick Off 2 in the past, you'll sure to enjoy even more now!
Do post, pm or email (kickoff2@hotmail.co.uk) if you have any questions.

    Cheers
    Gaz

More than half the people who are attending havent actually played the game in 12 Months+ and in some instances, about 15 years!
So if you liked the game but are worried about getting tanked then you neednt be, plus...there'l be three cup competitions which are staggered depending on your skill level...a chance to have a game on the big screen!

Used to play KO2 a lot, but sensi destroyed my ability to play it.

I know what you mean about the two games having a very different 'feel' but don't forget we have other Sensi players attending as well as KO2 players that still plays SWOS!

A few games and it'd all come back, especially with a few tips from more experienced players. The bottom line here is that footy gaming fans of all persuasions are welcome. We've even offering FREE entry to those making their debuts! :)

If you'r not doing anything this Saturday then you could do far worse than attend the 20th Anniversay of Kick Off 2. At least 2 players attending havent played in 15 years and more than half of the rest havent played in 12 Months.

    Och bawws!

I'd have loved this, I always considered myself somewhat of a master of KO2 (Once beat the Amiga 33-0!).

Mastered it all. The super-banana free kicks, the half-way line chiping the 'keeper...scoring off corners...even had dribbling down to a fine art.

Thinking of it, it probably is about 14-15 years since I played as well, it was either my first or second year at Uni.

But I bugger off up to Scotland this Friday for a week of walking, sleeping and reading...oh to be crowned the UK Champ...*looks whistfully into the middle-distance*

    Meh...

It was the other way around for me, could never get to grips with Sensi.

    Damn! That's too bad, STeaM.

I'm sure there'll be other tourneys where we could all hook up. You sounded like an exceptional player. 33-0 is amazing and compares very well with some KOA personal bests.

15 years or not, it'd be criminal to put those skills to waste. Check out the link in my signature from time to time for news of other tournaments....
