look at it this way.. you spent a lot of time with them... and your happy for it?
and hopefully they will say the same back... we all have friends of varying degrees.. the ones you will do almost anything for .. the ones who you don't see much but again same applies.. then the sods that turn up when they want something..

joke was deadpan reminded me of an aussie woman I used to know, she was "oh your too much"..blah blah.. yet when she spent 2 days going around london SHE was the one saying I should go back to oz with her..lol...
but if knowing someone makes you a better person, well thats all that counts.. or maybe I'm being simplistic.

You will have to get skype + a camera so you can have virtual nights in with beer. Simply plate the monitor on the chair you want him to sit on.
skype already sorted, I also gave him my personel copies of the c64 games I worked on seeing as he was c64 fan back in the day
