So, we've got a hung parliament...

edited May 2010 in Chit chat
The question is, who do you want to hang?

Regards,

Shaun.

I say in a situation like this there is only one man who can lead. Jeremy Clarkson.

Ed Balls. I'll leave it to your imagination as to which part of his anatomy he should be hung by.

I'm not sure George Osbourne would die if you hanged him..because he reminds me of Count Dracula. If he isn't Dracula, then he is almost certainly a vampire.
I stole it off a space ship.

Are you suggesting that he's the undead son of Micheal Howard? ;-)

Well, they (the three party leaders) did argue about who had the biggest chopper ;-)

They've all had a kick in the Ballots at least.

sadly it seems even if they DO manage to organise a piss up in a br........errrrrrrrm government, it wont last, and will prolly call another election in less than a year :(

I don't think that there will be another election within a year.

so... what exactly is a hung parliament?

We use the "first past the post" system. First to 326. It is a hung parliament where no party has the majority of seats. After the election the results were (for the main parties)

    Conservative 306
    Labour 258
    Liberal Democrat 57

So there is no majority that can form the new parliament. Liberal + Conservative would be a majority, but they have major differences in policy, hence all the private chatter.

The "hung parliament" term originates from the 18th Century when the the party that failed to form a coalition government would traditionally hang their leader. A brutal way to get things done, but there is no question things moved a lot quicker as a result.

Can't see that happening. He isn't going until a successor is chosen. He isn't standing down and handing over to his deputy.

As for the Labour party choosing Harman as the next leader? Ain't gonna happen. It'll be David Milliband or Ed Balls imo.

    Agreed.

However, compromises happen, a la Major.

Ed Balls has a majority of just over 1000, surely not enough to risk him being leader, forgetting for a minute the fact the guy is simply not credible. And David Miliband? My god. David Miliband.

Oh I agree about Ed Balls. Plus he's too close to Brown to offer any difference.

David Milliband is the favourite of many to take over: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/election_2010/8668608.stm

I forgot about Alan Johnson, I would put him second after David Milliband.

Also, according to the above page, Harman has ruled herself out, saying she prefers to remain deputy leader.
