GameBoy: Can anyone recommend....

Wotcha, all.

For my sins, I've just bought a GameBoy Advance from eBay (I was never into 'em the first time round) and was wondering if anyone knew of any decent 'adventure' games.

I've already bought Zelda: Link's Awakening, but are there any along the lines of your Wally series, Magic Knight, Dizzy, MegaBucks, et all?

The Castlevania games are worth a look. There's a cart out there that has 2 of them on. That's good value for money if you can find one.

Yeah the GBA Castlevania games are good Circle of the Moon is probably my fave, the second one that came out was way easy for a Castlevania game Harmony of Dissonance. The 3rd one got kind of boring tbh, but that may have been cos' I plowed my way through the previous 2 back to back before playing it.

Might as well give a heads up to Metroid Zero Mission and Metroid Fusion as well.

Lots of good oldskool style platformers and the like for the GBA, but not really sure about arcade adventure type games. Not in the old style anyway?

I keep going back to those every so often. Those are fantastic games. They're probably the most played games on our GBA, even over SML which I love.

Although I'll hopefully be getting Duck Tales soon for the GB :D
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

Hmmmm, Metroid still looks a bit 'GameBoy' (i.e. runny/jumpy) to me.

Okay, how about variations on Link's Awakening, or Quest for Camelot?

You should also give Sword Of Mana a go, and also Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age (you'll need both of those as they're 2 halves of the same game)

There are loads of different flash cartridges, all with different ways of programming them, and clones thereof. If you do get a second-hand one, finding the drivers on the net can be tricky. They're well worth all the trouble though. Then you can put the ZX Advance Speccy emulator on it...

As for arcade-adventures, Metroid Zero Mission is probably as close as it gets. It's a platform shooter but with loads of exploring for progressive upgrades that act as keys. If you liked Zelda: Link's Awakening (a GameBoy / GameBoy Color game) you should track down Zelda: The Minnish Cap - a much longer GBA adventure. Or there are the GameBoy Color Oracle of Seasons / Oracle of Ages games.

It's not an adventure, but another must-have cartridge for retro gaming is SEGA Arcade Classics - excellent quality conversions of After Burner, Space Harrier, Super Hang-On and Outrun on one cartridge.

If you don't mind monochrome, there may be one or two original GameBoy games that could fit the bill. Monster Max is an isometric-3D game by Jon Ritman, in the Head-Over-Heels style.

Yeah, Minish Cap is great. It's one of those games that I never completed, but I enjoyed it much more than the Zelda DS games.

Good call on the Sega Arcade Classics cart. Mine hardly ever leaves my GBA ;-)
