The game has been out for ~ two weeks now ... and you guys have finished it ... was it worth the $50??? (or whatever GBP)

I've had my money's worth easily. I've done just under 50% according to the stats, with 1 day's solid play spread over 8 days. You could easily blow ?40 on a couple of nights out, even one night out. I look at it like that - some people prefer spending their spare money on going out - fair play to them. Others like spending it on their hobby, which in my case is gaming. Not that I spend all my spare cash on games. Plus you can always flog your games on Ebay after you're done with them, and get quite a bit back (not that I'd ever flog RDR).

Plus with RDR, there's the online stuff. Always good to come back to if you fancy getting a posse together with your mates, or taking part in a 16 player shootout. Next month, Rockstar release a free download containing a few online coop missions, so there's even more to come.

I'll still play the single player mode when I've done the main game, to play stuff like the excellent Texas Hold 'Em, Blackjack or just ride around shooting bandits or hunting, and admiring the top notch graphics.

Easily :D I'm not far off 40% complete and have played it for at least 2 hours a night (most nights have been more though) and it's one of those games that just keeps on giving. I'm probably half way through the story now and there's still lots to do. I've got 5 birds to shoot from a moving train, still got 4 blue flowers to pick and for the life of me, I can't find the treasure out by hanging rock (I have the map, but do I need a spade, or am I looking in the wrong spot?). That's before I take into account all the jobs that i've not even started or the stranger tasks that I still need to do (I have 2 that are ongoing as they keep cropping up).

Oh and I've only managed to get 4 achevements so far. It's not a game that gives them up easily, so there's value there too (if you like the gamer points)

I've just finished the missions with that old gunslinger bloke (I can't remember his name!) and just done the mission where you need to protect the train and stop it before it gets to the bridge.

I should have the time today to put some serious hours in :D

You're in the right place, look harder. ;)

(When you're standing next to it, you'll be prompted to press "Y" to "inspect".)

I'm at that point again where there's no more side missions for me to do (except the hideouts, gonna save them for the end), so I'm now gonna just tackle the main story until I get to Blackwater.

Hehe...yeah definitely! Like I said, I may have finished it, but being on the dole means that I've put 6 whole days into it already...so that's 6 days entertainment for 40 quids worth of Tesco Vouchers.....and that's only so far!

Plus I got 800 MS points with it as well, so I bought The Secret Of Monkey Island too, which is going to get a play through once I'm done with Red Dead....

You have to remember that although you can complete the main missions, like all good sandbox games there's still loads to do afterwards...including some more stranger missions.
Plus you can theoretically play forever as the random events & missions keep on happening, and there will always be stuff to hunt and card games to play....

Not only that, but what's to stop people playing through the story a second time? I completed Bruce Lee on the Speccy first time I played it, but I still play it to this day.

True, and I played through the first time being rather nice and not just randomly robbing people and stuff, so I could be a proper outlaw next play through....

Wonder how that would affect your Stats and the like on Social Club though? Never thought about that with GTA....Hmmm....

Is it close to the rock, or a little further away? I've been around all the little rocks and have found one that looks like the set of 4 on the map, but I don't get a prompt. I'll try again later ;-)

I forgot about those. I used mine to pay for Perfect Dark, so that's made my ?40 RdR investment even more worthwhile :D

I'm 30% through after 12 hours play. With games if I get 1 hours enjoyment for every ?2 spent then it's great value. I've a feeling I'll get at least 40+ hours out of RDR as I'll complete it a couple of times and then there's the online aspect.

So yeah, ultimately it will be great VFM.

    Spoiler:

the problem with those treasure maps, is they seem to have been drawn by Mr Magoo. your better off finding the area and walking around yourself, looking at the map sends you off in the wrong direction.

(although they were really fun to do)

I'm not sure, I don't have a clue about all this Social Club lark!! When I did the Pike's Basin hideout, it said something about a Social Club challenge, but I haven't checked to see what that's done. I guess I'll find out more about it when I start playing online... not long now 'til I get to Blackwater.

Aye, I've found them really fun too. I've found most of them while just wandering around, thinking "that tree looks like the one on the map" etc. There was one that had me stumped for ages though, I think it was the third one, near Rio Del Lobo (or something like that).

once you get to blackwater (west elizabeth) , just ride around the map, you'll be ready for multiplayer then.

there are 2 what i'd call spoilers in multiplayer i noticed. one is a weapon, the other one you should have worked out already.

yeah that was the first one, i used the river to find that one, i just rode along the shore till i found it.

i do like games where they don't hand you the thing on the plate.

speaking of which there are supposed to be cheats in the 'world' or at least codes for them. have a look in your menu in the cheats section. i bet they are available online now, but it might be cool to figure them out for yourself

Do you mean the rare weapon? Not sure if there's more than one, but when I bought the semi-automatic pistol (which I hate, much prefer the six-shooters), it unlocked an achievement saying I had bought a rare weapon (can't be that rare, it was in a general store )!?

The first treasure is the one at Hanging Rock, but I know the one you mean, the one I found tricky is on the other side of the river to that one (quite high up a mountain, past an old hut, then along a path).

I've not thought about cheats really, but like with GTA IV, it's not until I've completed it properly that I'll start having some fun with the cheats.

nah its just a gun you obtain later in a mission, nothing special just i wasn't expecting to see it. its no biggie though.

im sure the hanging rock is the second treasure in mexico, but you might be right, im not sure

i know which one you mean though, i struggled with that one the map was next to useless

i dont think i ever bothered with cheats in GTA4, there was something about them buggering up the acheivements. the RDR they specifically say they wont mess any of them up. ;)

    Hanging Rock isn't in Mexico!! :-P ;)

Yep, certain cheats you use in GTA IV block certain achievements, but as long as you save the game before going on your weapons-cheat rampage, you can always revert to the save to get any achievements you need.

I might eventually get the game aeons from now ... (along with the box capable of playing it)

But I have just one more question:
Is the world-map as large as you guys gasped about at the start of the thread?
  • edited May 2010
Sat up until 6am this morning, trying to get the achievement for 4 Gang War game wins in a row...absolutely shattered...:D

Before that, had a blast (literally) manning a cannon at the fort and holding off the Mexican army with my posse! It's a really easy way to do the outlaw challenges if 3 or 4 of you can hold off the soldiers for a while....and Free Roam is definitely more fun if you can get a decent bunch of guys together for a posse..

And Mile, I noticed you pop up in one of the games when it said you were Most Wanted, and I was going to send you a posse invite, but you left just as I was about to send it...:)

Something strange happened in my game last night; I unlocked an achievement for earning $10,000 in single player, erm, but I only have something like $3500. Weird!!

Anyways, bank holiday Monday, gonna be playing it for most of today. I'm sure I'll be leaving Mexico soon, but I'm still getting sidetracked by stranger quests and bounties... I'm getting there though.

its acumulated over the time you have played. so you must have spent 6,500 though the game.

i found an nice easy way to achieve one of the hunter perks. but telling you would give away some of the game.

i hope you discover it though. ;)

Hehe cool, I'll let you know when I come across it. I think I need elk meat and bighorn skins next, so I'll have to wait until I unlock the third map.

you can get big horns in mehico.

took me a while to figure out what they were though. :p

Yeah, I've come across a couple of bighorns in Mexico, not seen any elks though.

Just had the game crash on me again after completing a mission, lost all progress I made in the last hour or so. I might apply for a job at Rockstar as a playtester... seems like they don't actually test much, should be an easy job!! ;)
