Abu Sumbel Profanation

edited August 2004 in Games
I just downloaded the new TZX from the TZX Vault, but I can't get it to play. When I use Spectaculator it loads and will get to the menu then nothing happens no matter what key you press.
When I tried it in Spin, again no problem loading - got to the menu, pressed 3 for keyboard, game started but the character just kept jumping right.
Any ideas?

Assuming you mean the Gremlin version, then choose 48k+ from the hardware menu in SPIN. It's something to do with the keyboard port and the board issue number...

On emulators that get this wrong or don't emulate it, then the keys can be read as "stuck".

    Hope that helps,

I got the same problem with the froggy chracter jumping right and I was using Macspectacle.

Tried that, still doesn't work. The character just keeps jumping right. Also in Spin, on the main menu pressing 4 for instructions takes you briefly to the instruction page but very quikly jumps back to the menu.

What can I say? It's working just fine here, and that particular area of SPIN hasn't been altered since before the release of 0.5.

I'll download the version you have, and try that just in case though.

You *are* using the latest release, yes?

Yes, I'm using the latest (available) versions of Spectaculator and Spin and using the latest addition version of the game from the Vault.

Funny thing is when I downloaded it, I accidently overwrote my old working copy of it.

I'll think you'll find that if you enable Issue 2 keyboard emulation in Spectaculator, it works...

    Ahh, thanks. Works fine.

You know I know its not possible, but it would be nice if there was a way that inside the TZX file there was a way of telling the emulator what settings to use. ie 48k only, issue 2 emulation, etc.

Why is it not possible? I suggest you read the TZX Specification before answering.

I had similar problems with this and with the previous TZX file too - and using Real Spectrum and Klive. It seems that the game uses unorthodox methods to read the keyboard, but don't ask me more - I'm no technical buff. Setting the keyboard to emulate the Kempston joystick always solves the problem.

It's not a very good game anyway

EVERY guardian is placed in a very tight spot and the collision detection is ambiguous to say the least. The levels are way too linear (no exploration) and the traps are all the same (deviously placed guardians).

    Boring.
