Most of classic games available for Amstrad are also available for Spectrum. So you can try for fun your favourite games in their Spectrum versions and compare strengths and weaknesses of both machines.
And World of Spectrum has an advanced search engine. You can search for games with high voting scores to find the best ones. Sometimes the votes are biased, but most often they'll tell you the truth.
Maybe to start off with choose a few different genres. Im always drawn back to text adventures even though im not very good at them and coin op conversions are always popular at my house.
Renegade, Target Renegade, Saboteur 2, Humphrey, El Misterio del Nilo, Robocop, Commando, Cobra, I advice any of those. There are many, many more though.
Manic Miner.
Jet Set Willy.
Chuckie Egg.
Lazy Jones.
Streaker.
Finders Keepers.
Spellbound.
Knight Tyme.
Stormbringer.
Dizzy (and it's many sequels).
Kings Keep.
Mega Bucks.
Star Firebirds.
Spiky Harold.
Who dares Wins II.
Spike.
Super Robin Hood.
Curse of Sherwood.
Specventure.
Jasons Gem.
Rockman.
Jack the Nipper 1 and 2.
Shoa Lins Road.
Yie Ar Kung Ku.
Way of the Exploding Fist.
Sai Combat.
Way of the Tiger.
Bruce Lee.
Cosmic Wartoad.
Automania.
Chiller.
The Great Escape.
Highway Encounter.
Chronos.
Kokitoni Wilf.

Rapscallion.
Psytron.
Bugaboo.
You might like to try comparing some of the cross-platform greats like R-Type, Fairlight, Cybernoid and Head Over Heels to see how they measure up.
But for a more uniquely Speccy experience you'll have to go back to before everything was a cross-platform big-budget release and enjoy the classics like Manic Miner and Atic Atac. But be warned - these can be very off-puttingly hard on your first few attempts, so get stuck in (and familiarise yourself with the map of Atic Atac).
For simply great games though, I'd you can't go far wrong with Cyclone, Highway Encounter, Quazatron, Batty, The Trap Door, Commando, Sabre Wulf and Exolon.

both manic miner and atic atac are great and not that ahrd even at first, 2 of the first games i ever got, and atic atac ive completed from way back, still can, and manic miner...not completed but can get quite a way through a lot of the time
Professional Mel-the-Bell Simulator................"So realistic, I found myself reaching for the Kleenex King-Size!" - Richard Darling
Many of the classic games you might already know from the CPC version. Of course you can download and compare them, but I think more interesting is the new software advertised also often in this forum. Alone this year were surely about 10 new great games released. These new games are using the possibilities of the Spectrum better than the professional software houses did back in the 80s. However, of course some classic games are always the best.
Just have a look at the announced games in this forum.

If they're the first games you ever got, I think it's fair to say you've had a bit of practise by now so they don't seem so tough!
I can finish both of them, but in both cases I hardly got anywhere on my first few goes. I remember when it was a big thing to reach the third level of Manic Miner.
Search YouTube for "ysrnry" and get the year-by-year highlights :)
I had a look at the 1989 one just now and I heard a prince song that was used in the original batman film i think. What was the name of the song? I cant seem to find it!

2.Mugsy (strategy)
3.Atic Atac (overhead maze/puzzle)
4.Lords Of Midnight (RPG/strategy)
5.Starquake (platformer)
6.Enduro Racer (bike racer)
7.Commando (run'n'gun)
8.Bombjack (platformer)
9.Tomahawk (chopper sim)
10.Hampstead (graphic adventure)
May need to check with compatibility (some came out before the +2 and may not load) And enjoy!

Nice adventure games. Besides, any 'Ultimate Play the Game' game is a classic. Unfortunately, they are denied games, no available to download.
Scuba Dive
Trashman
Ant Attack
Alchemist
Oracles Cave
Chase HQ
Try this, try that, try everything...
