Maziacs the Boardgame

edited June 2010 in Announcements
Hi all, I'm new to these forums although I've been an Spectrum fan and user since my childhood days.

One of my favorite games ever is Maziacs, and I've been working on a boardgame version of this game for a while. Now I think it's ready for release, so I've made it available for free as a "print and play" game.

More information and a download link are at the game's Boardgamegeek page: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/73255/maziacs-the-boardgame

It's a solo/coop game that tries to emulate the experience of the original game.

It uses tiles to build the maze and a mechanic to generate a unique path to the treasure. This path is generated as the player asks prisoners that can be found in the maze for the correct way to the treasure. It plays fast and I think it is fun.

BTW, I contacted the original programmer: Don Priestley, who was kind enough to let me use the name for this "port". Thanks to him for being so nice!

Looking very cool indeed. I'm downloading it as we speak!

Any other plans for board games? 3D Monster Maze or Catacombs for example??

Rebelstar, Lasersquad or Chaos would make a cool boardgames!

    Adios,

I did it the otherway around.

I made a computerversion of a boardgame with A.I. (WorldBar {original = Cafe International} and Shogun) and I altered Worldbar from a boardgame into an arcadegame.

Very interesting. As you may know, I'm still part-way through producing 3 different ZX Spectrum inspired boardgames and hope to have them published in a couple of years. Definitely going to have a look at Maziacs and see how it plays. Do you have permission from the copyright holder or is it a, 'just-for-fun' project? Certainly looks good, either way!

Currently I've got no plans to make any other spectrum-based games. I've done other computer based boardgames in the past: One based on Core-Wars for the Icehouse system, a climbing game based on the rock climbing sections of Chamonix Challenge/Final Assault and a space trading dice game loosely based on Elite. In fact, I even did a ZX Spectrum port of that last one ( http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=0023679 ) Anyway, all those boardgames are available on my BGG profile: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgamedesigner/7299/jorge-arroyo

All my boardgame designs are "for fun" and freely available, and I usually don't use any names or graphics from any material I'm inspired by. This time it was the exception, and I wanted to use the "Maziacs" name to pay tribute to a game I've loved since I was a child. So I went ahead and contacted Don Priestley and he was very nice and let me use the name without any problem :D Still, the game doesn't use any of the game's graphics, just the name.

Edit: Now that I think about it, I did work on another board game based on a game from the Spectrum era, Sentinel. But I didn't get too far. I did make some 3d terrain pieces to build the landscape and it was sort of a puzzle game...

Oh, and I'd love to read more about your games, Graz :)
