That makes me laugh. I know quite a few people like that. Heard many stories of dodgy blokes in petrol stations cloning cards etc. If it happens it happens. My postman nicked my cheque book years back, bank sorted it out. My parents wont put their details online but are quite happy to write cheques or use a card at a petrol station.

If it happens it happens. Lifes too short to start worrying or spending 12 hours deleting posts from a forum etc to cover your history. Jesus, would take me about 4 months to delete mine !

Coupled with that the folk who at filling stations are reluctant to use pay at pump, due to a mistrust of machines and then go in the filling station and hand their card over to someone who is statistically much more likely to rip you off than the pay at pump mechanism.

    Hehe...

I use my real name. But then again, I believe I've made it quite clear in an old post that if anyone tries to track me down, I'd be quite happy to shoot them :)

There are some benefits to living in America :)

Ha ha ! Well done detective ;)

I actually emailed the guy to ask him to change it as old mates were searching for me and then saying 'ha ha you sad muppet, saw a picture of you....' so it was getting a bit annoying. But then i thought ahhh sod it. Still not the best thing to have about me when people do a search under my name and thats about the 2nd hit.

If i was really bothered i could probably get a solicitor (eg my wife !) and get it removed but nahhh.

Happened to me about 5 months ago...took my car for repair put on a Credit Card...which I had not used in about a year. A week later I got a call from American Express for suspicious activity..one of the guys at the garage had taken my details and used it online apparently....(itunes to be exact).

They issued me a new card, no skin of my nose or fees to pay...most have 100% free fraud protection these days (at least mine all do and I wouldn't get one that didn't)

Does remind me of that classic Viz top tip, something like....

Always remember to put your name and address on your keyfob, so if your keys go missing some nice person will return them to your house. Also put what time you'll be in so they wont miss you when they go to your house

I wouldn't want to use a real name on a gaming forum, there are just too many idiots who take it far too seriously and if they lose to you would want to give you hassle IRL. The other problem with using your real name in a gaming forum is that future employers might see you've played the game and therefore decide to pass you over because you play "childish games". (Actually, on second thoughts, I'd want to be passed over by an employer with that kind of attitude).

Blizzard are stuck a bit between a rock and a hard place because apparently their forums are huge troll fests and people will think twice if their real ID is linked to what they post on a forum. If you don't want to use your real name, there are other forums for Blizzard games.

...assuming you have a globally unique name of course....ultimately it's just a name.....if I google John Jones I cant really say 'ah ha!...it's him!!!' I'm not hiring a game nerd!

Edit: Google my name in Texas and apparently I'm a famous columnist with the Dallas morning news..

Actually I was in a restaurant up in Dallas a couple years ago and I gave my cc to the waiter..next thing the manager comes over and say's "if you write me a good review the meal is free"....sadly I was too slow to pick up on what he was talking about! or I'd have said OK...damn.

Seems to be a lot of plastic ones around....easier to assemble and they don't rot..stick an A/C unit in them and line 10 next to each other and you have a government housing project.

a few folk off here know where I live and my name.. I don't mind, the vast majority of folk online are fine.

I'd be more "annoyed" if you turned up without biscuits or a toast rack speccy if you wanted to visit.haha

I don't want folk who I used to know looking me up though, simply because.. well lets face it we all know a couple of planks.

Battery hens then eh. I wouldn't mind a plastic shed / den like that for all my spectrum stuff.

I don't really have a problem with anyone knowing stuff about me, mainly because...

    a) I'm skint, so have no money to worry about getting nicked

    b) I'm generally nice to people online, and

    c) I already know the biggest bunch of freaks and psychos around, so ....

    :)

I'm not worried that people know who I am or where I live. So what? Before getting the internet I've had stalkers and people wanting to kill me or do me over. I stand out like a sore thumb. Never mind, eh. :S

I would say, don't ever post under a real name and never put you email address either.

Things you post online can be misread which can annoy some unbalanced people which can only lead to problems.
