Skool tunes

edited July 2010 in Games
As you may or may not know, the theme tune to Skool Daze is a raspy rendition of the old nursery rhyme "Girls and boys come out to play". But what about the other Skool tunes?
  • When you open the safe in Skool Daze
  • Back to Skool theme tune
  • When you open the safe in Back to Skool

The tunes sound familiar, but that's probably because I've heard them about 7 billion times now. Do they come from nursery rhymes too?

    Back to Skool (safe);
Here we go round the mulberry bush,
The mulberry bush, the mulberry bush.

    Good work. So we have:

Skool Daze theme: Girls and boys come out to play
    Skool Daze safe: ???
    Back to Skool theme: ???
Back to Skool safe: Here we go round the mulberry bush

    2 down, 2 to go.

If you look/listen to the AY file for Skool Daze there appear to be 3 tunes, not 2 (although the 2nd tune seems to be a segment from the 3rd tune). Presumably there are 3 different events at which each tune is played.

IIRC, Skool Daze has 2 tunes (call them Tune A and Tune B) to mark 4 different events:

    1. Before a game or demo mode starts: Tune A.
    2. On flashing the final shield: Tune B.
    3. On opening the safe: Tune B.
    4. On unflashing the final shield (going up a year): Tune A.

Perhaps it'd be worth putting up some MP3s, for the benefit of people who are better at recognising tunes than completing Skool Daze? :-)

Bak 2 skool start theme always reminded me of "Yellow rose of texas"

    Good point! :)

all-shields.ogg (tune played when you open the safe in Skool Daze)
bts-tune.ogg (Back to Skool opening tune)

(These audio files are taken from the 'sounds' directory in Pyskool. Audio files for the other skool tunes can be found there too.)

Aha! The first one of those is Au Clair De La Lune.
  • edited July 2010
I believe the Skool Daze tune is a very quick rendition of Au Clair de la Lune.

    Edit: bah, beaten to it...

Well done that gasman (and yomlogs). So we have:

Skool Daze theme: Girls and boys come out to play
Skool Daze safe: Au clair de la lune
    Back to Skool theme: ???
Back to Skool safe: Here we go round the mulberry bush

    3 down, 1 to go.

(Zaph0dd: I'm not hearing "Yellow Rose of Texas" in the Back to Skool theme, no matter how hard I try. But perhaps I'm not trying hard enough.)

My brother's a musician and I mailed him the link. This was his reply (I can't take the credit for this:razz:)

I'm pretty sure that's a very, VERY fast version of an old negro spiritual called "Nobody knows the trouble I've seen", covered by loads of people over the years but I think most well-known by old "Satchmo" himself, Louis Armstrong.

Compare the link and see if you agree!

I've always thoughts so too. Since Princess Vespa sings it gaol in SpaceBalls.

Yes, that's very similar to the Back to Skool opening tune.

So, I wonder why Dave Reidy chose three children's songs and then an old negro spiritual? Perhaps there is also a children's song that uses the same tune as Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen?

    Anyway:

Skool Daze theme: Girls and boys come out to play (video)
Skool Daze safe: Au clair de la lune (video)
Back to Skool theme: Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen (video)
Back to Skool safe: Here we go round the mulberry bush (video)

Thanks to all who listened and researched. Now I have two new trivia entries for the next version of the Skool Disassemblies. :)
