Ebay geek help - did i do the right thing?

edited July 2010 in Chit chat
right
i aint an ebay geek, ive barely ever used it, i dont know the ettiquette etc

anyway
recently i bought a cardiacs cd.......cheap (the seller is the record label) it was i think ?2.99 plus ?1 postage
it didnt actually get delivered, i recieved a card saying i needed to pick up a package and would have to pay ?1.10 as it had the incorrect postage on (it turned out it had a normal first class stamp on)
admitted it was just the cd, inlay, booklet in a flimsy plastic sleeve rather than the usual cd box, but obviously still it wasnt enough.

so on ebay i left neutral feedback stating the good bits, plus the bad bit
well packaged, fast delivery, great condition,BUT postage wasnt enough to cover :(

hes replied to me with "same postage as every other copy of this CD we sent out with no problem !"
and also messaged me saying before i left feedback why didnt i contact him, now im sorry BUT unless he can get a time machine and go back to before my cd was "none" delivered and make it so it was pushed through the letterbox so i didnt have to pick it up myself then theres not a lot he could do
and i thought neutral was fair with the plus points too, i couldnt gen him negative lol he should be lucky.

now im thinking i should ignore it otherwise im gonna get bogged down in a tit for tat war? i was tempted to reply to him about his "same postage as every other copy of this CD we sent out with no problem !" reply stating that mine obviously wasnt enough cos i had to pick it up myself and pay ?1.10 for the privelige.
he hasnt left me any feedback yet i dont mind if he leaves me neutral aswell as long as he too mentions the good points, ie:- i paid almost instantanously

1st class stamp? what sort "large letter" ?? if he's not willing to sort it as an adult "sod" them dispute it.. also if it's just a 1st class stamp for normal letters , thats not gonna cover it and is a "mickey" take

I'd dispute it, take a pic of the actually packet / anything you got from the post office..

i make 100% sure if i sell things on ebay i NEVER under-do the postage...

    http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/jump2?catId=400023&mediaId=11200122

is what I use to find exact weight etc.. it'll prolly be under 100 grams though

your out ?1.10 coz of them being a tit with the postage.. so yer dispute it.. must have done it to others.. if it was multi-item sales..

as a seller I try to keep buyers happy, but as a buyer.. you do get some proper "gits" trying it on .. I've disputed some items.

i dont have the envelope or the thingy from the post office, they take that off you when you recieve your package............tbh i aint bothered about disputing it, the cds fine, paying the excess is over, ive paid its done.
the sticking point is he feels hard done by over me leaving a neutral feedback for it, should i argue the toss with him over it lol

it's not the fact it's ?1 or ?10.. it's the fact the prat knowingly did it on purpose.. and hopes more won't contest it...

if your happy to pay ?1.10 more than you should have fair enough. they are probably doing the same to a lot more..

Mile , dunno about frank mail... I notice your a bit of an expert ;) should I be worried if I sell ya a none working make a chip ?!?! :p

Did it have a return addresse, and if so why wasn't it returned to the sender instead? (that's how it works here at least)

sadly Znor it doesn't work that way here. and they won't tell you what it is till you pay for it.

they are obliged to show it to you, and you can choose if you want to refuse it.

that's how ive always done it.

maybe they are not obliged but every time i have done it in my sorting office they show it to me first.

You should have asked him to send you the extra or tell him that you had to pay as it wasn't stamped. He should then pay his way, if he doesn't then negative feedback is left. Thats what its for at the end of the day.

on ebay ALWAYS contact the seller first if you have an issue
it may have been a genuine cock-up! you'll soon see which feedback you need to leave given the promptness and nature of the response to the cockup (ideally in this case it should have been 'show me the post office letter and i'll paypal you the cash back)

needless to say, a neutral isn't that harmful, so you did almost the right thing :-)

As a power seller on ebay I know that negative or neutral feedback can have a massive effect on sellers. If he always ships CDs with regular 1st Class stamps and has decent feedback you have to assume that this is normally enough to cover the postage. I would say that a CD is verging on a Large Letter stamp depending on the packaging (Jiffy?), and maybe this is a little subjective when it comes to a Royal Mail determination.
As a seller, if it had been me, had you contacted me I would happilly have refunded the extra postage cost, rather than you neutral or neg me.
This, I think, is where the seller may have been coming from.
    Just my 2c

as a seller , have you ever under done it on the postage? thats how I look at it.. if I was the seller, and was 10000% sure I didn't under cut.. i'd ask for proof, e.g. the post office slip / packaging (has markings? ) then refund no worries, I have refunded for lost things in the past.. and feel no way about it.. it's part of it

yer he might be sending out loads of the same thing, but the post office machines would suss it's not the right postage.. maybe others have had the same but haven't been bothered as it's ?1.10.. not the point.. as if it's 10 people thats ?10

As the seller he cant leave you negative feedback anyway, dont think even neutral. As a buyer you can leave positive/negative/neutral.

In a way you could have contacted him first (ebay says to do that if youre about to leave neg/neutral) to try to sort it out, if he wasnt going to pay the extra postage then leave a neutral or neg.

But it seems like an unfortunate ebay transaction, 99.9% of mine are fine but you get the odd problem from time to time. Dont think the other bloke did it on purpose (his feedback looks great), just might have had a jobsworth at the post office (might even have weighed it wrong there)

    cheers guys for the replies
seems most of you said i shouldve contacted him first......for the extra cash

    BUT

as i said before thats only half the hassle, nothing on this gods earth couldve put it right me having to go to the sorting office to collect it rather than it land on my doorstep (which is mainly what i left neutral for)

as for the postage, well he swore blind hes sent loads of em out and not had any probs, just me then, maybe it costs more to post things out here lol

Sh1t happens, nowadays we live in a 'blame' culture anyways so someone is always at fault here
why not sue royal mail for your time for their mis-evaluation of postage value of the item?

sometimes 'sorry' ain't enough for some people ;-)

if you'd have wanted superb quick, correct postage, you should have gone to amazon or one of the retail interweb places

I've been a power seller a couple of times on ebay, things cockup sometimes in transactions between individuals!

Of the ?1.10 extra you had to pay, ?1 will be Royal mail charge, the rest is deficient postage. Maybe a stamp fell off, who knows. It can be annoying having to make an extra trip to get your post.

I'd have made the seller aware first, then probably left neutral if they didn't offer to refund the extra cost, Positive, if they did, and Negative if they got abusive.
