I can honestly say there isn't a tune of theirs I dislike...and with most of my favourite groups there are usually still a few turkeys in there - not so with The Roses.
You know I'm utterly ashamed to admit that I'd never even heard a track by them until last year when the missus started playing a Greatest Hits album in the car.
They just completely passed me by, and even just now after reading this thread I went onto Spotify and tried the most popular tracks; didn't recognise a single one of them.
Manic Street Preachers were the same - only one that rings any bells is A Design For Life.
It wasn't like I didn't listen to tons of music back then, maybe it was too much metal :-)
Great stuff. I saw them in Reading in 1996 (IIRC) and it was superb!
I witnessed something too a few years back. I was at an Arthur Lee & Love gig in Manchester (I went to most of them since 2003 up here) and Arthur had finished and I was waiting for the crowds to clear so that I could get out (I hate slowly walking in a crowd to the tiny exit, might as well wait for it to clear then just walk normally) and as the crowd was nearly gone I saw, talking together at the back of the hall, John Squire, Mani & Reni!
The only one missing was Ian Brown. I did a double take I can tell ya! I just wish I'd been really rude and snapped a photo, it's obvious that no one else did!
I really like these songs: what the world is waiting for, elephant stone, one love. they're not on the albums though
I do not particularly like either of their 2 albums that much. first one sounds like a rip off of primal screams 'sonic flower groove' if you ask me! I know Im in a minority, couple of my mates think they're the best band ever but I cant really get into them
I like 'em. I was in 4th year at school when I was made aware of them.
I was never really into collecting and listening to music much at that time (it was all speccy games:smile:) but as an adult, I now appreciate them and other bands around the Madchester era! (Mock turtles et al) jesus Jones too! Bloody ace. They don't make tracks like those any more:cry: I'm gonna download them all now!:p
I quite liked that Seahorses album too. nearly went to see them in middlesboro when I was at sunderland uni for the student paper, wanted me and one other guy to review the gig then interview john squire, but this bloke I knew who was a massive stone roses fan begged me for a week to let him do it instead of me, so I let him go instead, but apparently they could not get anywhere near john squire for an interview, even though it had been arranged.
Apparently due to the 20th anniversary of spike island gig, there's meant to be a bbc documentary in the works, there was a trailer of a amateur video of the concert leaked a while back which was quickly pulled from net,so maybe there is footage out there of the concert, anyways anyone looking for good book of the band, check out "The Stone Roses" and the Resurrection of British Pop",it goes up the very end of the band and details their period of activity from 1990-1994.
Most of the tunes are good, a few drag on a little but mainly good stuff. Fools Gold is possibly one of my fave tunes by them even though some of the die hard don't rate it much.
Yeah, I like quite a lot of their stuff..I Wanna Be Adored is still one of the only songs I can play the intro to on guitar!
I went to see Ian Brown at T in The Park one year with a girl who's a massive Stone Roses fan....he upset a lot of people by only coming on for a couple of songs, before wandering off unhappy at sound quality and trying to pick a fight with security....
I thought it was ace and expected nothing less! And by him doing that, I got to go and see the end of the Foo Fighters who I prefer anyway..
Yeah, I like them too. Got the two proper albums and the Turns Into Stone compilation. The band I'm in does a pretty good cover of Fool's Gold (although we haven't played it in yonks).

his outbursts seemed have become stuff of legend, theres plenty of vids of him on youtube fighting with audience.
Yeah i remember that bit in the film. If Second Coming was totally terrible i could understand, granted after their debut album it was going to be hard to top it but Second Coming i think is superb.
Begging you, Ten Storey Love song to name two. Some very good tracks on that album.
A fair few people seem to slate it but its not that bad at all.

Tightrope was another brilliant one,was recorded in a tv studio, then track was overlayed, excellent acoustic number,as for their live performances,i often heard they where rubbish live, and listening to some bootlegs some performances where appalling, but the leeds country club 1995 show recorded by the bbc they where on top form that night, really good show.

I went to the infamous "Spike Island" gig and it was quite possibly the worst organised event I've ever been too. Not that I remember that much of it, the acid back then was a little mind bending! I read quite a few years later in NME or Melody Maker that Spike Island would never pass health regulations to play such an event by today's standards. It was a red hot day, it was very dusty under foot and when the band eventually came on, the dust cloud that resulted from people jumping up and down was enormous. Never thought anything of it at the time but according to the article, the dirt was full of industrial chemicals and some people who went to the gig have suffered with respiratory problems.
The first album's very good although vastly overated. The 2nd coming is shit though. God knows what happened in those 6 years inbetween albums, but it's got to rank as one of the worst ever follow ups,
After the debut album and realising they had a bad deal, they wanted out from silvertone, who the court ruled in the roses favour, but silvertone appealed which delayed the roses recording.

Completely disagree ! I think after their debut album it was going to be tough as anything to follow it up
Just going through the songs now...
The opener i like (apart from the first 4 minutes of noisey crap)
Driving south - this 2nd tune is a classic
Ten storey love song - bit more mainstream but a good one
Begging you - Think this is a very underated tune
Tears - Love this tune, specially when it really gets into it at 2:15
Love spreads - Another classic
The rest of the tunes are 'so so' but to me personally theres 6 very good tunes on it with a couple of classics.
I wouldnt say its one of the worst follow ups of all time. Think because of the length between their debut and this people were disappointed but it wasnt that bad, no way one of the worst follow ups of all time though

Still unrivalled to this very day if you ask me.

Oh yes - got to love the Roses!
Like a lot of Brown's solo stuff too...
Totally agree. I've got all their albums, classic band; 2nd all time fave
all classics

I don't care!

Ed: Stone Roses?
Shaun: No.
Ed: Second Coming?
Shaun: I like it.
Ed: Ah! Sade.
Shaun: That's Liz's.
Ed: Yeah, but she did dump you. [Throws it]
