BBC iPlayer

I read in the paper today that the BBC may start charging an Iplayer tax, due to more and more people using it and less people watching programmes on standard tv.
The BBC will stop at nothing to get more money out of people. I use BBC iPlayer occasionally (watch either Dragons Den or Have i got news for you on it). If they start charging for using iplayer they should reduce the tv license.

Errr, this is a Tory plan (well, Tory thoughts at this stage), not BBC-driven.

Yeah, it's a government idea not the BBC's; and from what I could gather rather than an "iPlayer tax" it was more a way of collecting the license fee from people who don't own televisions but watch the BBC using a computer rather than getting additional money out of those who already own a TV and pay the license fee.

so in theory if we already pay for a license we SHOULDNT need to pay AGAIN?

i only use it to rip something i missed that was interesting

Right that those who pay our licences shouldn't have to pay again for something we may or may not use. Plenty of people never use iPlayer. I use occasionally, mainly to watch Formula 1 as I don't get to watch a lot of the races live.

I only used iPlayer once and that was to download the Doctor Who 2010 Prom yesterday

It's quite simple, all they need to do is put a code on your TV license, and you just log into the iPlayer using this code. Then those without TV licenses can't use the iPlayer. Simple, fast, cheap.

well that's no use at all! how would that keep hundreds of workers in jobs for years consulting on how best to achieve the system?

Ah, i didn't realise it was a Tory plan (i thought it was a BBC idea). I hope it dosen't become law.
ITV have a player as well, which is free, probably just as well as all they show is shite!

I never watch telly any more, just iPlayer. I still have a TV licence though.

Well, the Tories want the BBC to become smaller and cheaper - they've been floating various ideas for weeks now.

They seem to think we want a crapper BBC.

    I have no idea why.

I bet it was in the "DAILY MAIL", and according to them it's Gordon Brown's or the European Union's fault.

I think they want to cut out the profitable bits to give to Murdoch et al, and leave what's left to call "Public Service Broadcasting". Will be interesting to see what happens to the BBC News dept and website.

I'm not in the UK and therefore can't use iPlayer but would love to. If this would be possible by paying a small fee, I'm all up for it. :)

I love using the iPlayer, particularly on the Wii since it's hooked up to the "big" TV in the lounge. But forcing people to pay for it is a bad idea and probably not workable.
