Msx

Does anyone recommend emulating MSX? If so, MSX 1 or 2 or both? And what games should I start off with - especially interested in games that were unique to MSX or where the MSX was considered to have the best home computer or console version.

Not unique to the MSX but it does have a very good version of Arkanoid 2.

I think most emulators will do both MSX1 and 2.

Tons of great Konami games on the MSX. I liked going through the different Gradius games they had, quite a few.

Really like the MSX, used to play the emulator on my old GP32 tons.

I owned an MSX back in the day (well, brother did) and I thought it was a cracking machine. Oh Sh*t! was a particular favourite - it was a very good Pacman clone. The MSX2 cartridges, especially those by Konami were awesome. Hypersports was virutally exactly the same as the arcade machine IIRC.

Many of the best MSX games were never translated from Japanese to English. The MSX version of Ultima 4 probably has the best graphics of any platform.

Yeah I'm interested in the MSX too. I'm assuming that all the Spectrum era games worked on the MSX1? And is it possible to upgrade an MSX1 to MSX2?

MSX2 is 1986, like ZX Spectrum 128 (although it was much larger improvement). The best games are for MSX2, however, I've got impression that in modern retrodev community MSX2 is not too much praised, similar to ZX48 vs ZX128.

It is not possible to upgrade MSX1 to MSX2.

Only those that were converted, and most of them were converted as fast as possible to keep'em cheap, so they didn't make a proper use of the extended graphics possibilities or hardware sprites. The result often looks like the spectrum version, but plays slower.

There were kits to do this, but AFAIK they're quite rare and expensive, so right now it's much easier and cheaper to just look for an MSX2 or higher model. Besides, many games were incompatible with the upgrade kit, because it changed the graphics ports, and badly written games took them for granted in their usual positions.

Is there a flash loading device for the MSX machines? Like for example you have flash cards for game consoles like the PC Engine etc. Is there something similar for the MSX so that you can play a game without having to load it from cassette or cartridge?

Failing that you could always get the Mega-CD version?

Didn't the MSX2 have Valis games released for it that weren't released on Megadrive or PC Engine?

Without emulation,Pal mega cd version is scarce to buy and i think its more at home on the msx.

I read about model that's available that will play games from either an original cart or from an SD card via a front socket. The MSX was (and probably still is) a very popular machine in Japan.

I've nevr looked into emulating this machine, but I'm just starting a week off, so I'll have a look and see what I can see ;-)

I don't have an MSX, but I understand that the MSX is pretty similar to the Speccy.

I was looking at the dutch MSX (retro)scene some time ago. It seems to be dead.

Is there any MSX activity anywhere else?

MSX is similar to ZX, but technically more advanced, especially MSX2 - with specific problems, though, so there are some cases when ZX is superior (3D graphics, for example).

I'd say, MSX retrodev scene is one of the most active.
