Certain death...

edited August 2010 in Games
I've just had a quick bash of Manic Miner, as I do every now and then. I was doing well, not a life lost, then came "The Endorian Forest"... all lives gone. That screen means sure-fire death for me, every time.

Another one: Silkworm. I'm pretty sure I used to be good at this way back when, but now I always get as far as the bit where the fighter jets start charging towards me and then "BOOM!", certain death, lives lost, game over, every time.

Anyone else have a certain bit in a game that they just can't get past?

I've not played Ghouls & Ghosts on the Speccy, basically because I found the first one so damn hard... I can make it a few steps forward and that's about it.

In fact, I've never played Caves Of Doom either... might give that a go now, actually. :)

I think I only ever got past the ice palace in Ghosts and Goblins ... once.

Then there is the end of level 4 boss in R-type which I only got past ... once.
  • Myth level 2 the 3 headed Hydra. I have completed the game but usually i die at this point. Sometimes i'll push up by mistake and jump forward into the lava. Up makes you jump forwards and down to jump straight up. Easy to make a mistake in a panic. Stupid controls!

I had a couple of these old nemeses.
A Day In The Life - I was stuck on the same screen (the bistro) for 22 years. I finally worked it out by sheer fluke in 2008, only to get stuck again 2 screens later. I am still working on it, although it's starting to dawn on me that I may not get there in my lifetime :( I'll have to start training my kids... maybe put a clause in my will or something...

Combat School - the level where you have to fight the instructor. I managed it once only to immediately die on the next level. I've given up on this one now.

It's not quite the same thing, but in Head Over Heels, I can have a sort of mini breakdown where I just can't judge how to jump over craters. I can just snap at any time and instantly burn through 8 lives - incredibly frustrating.

Renegade, level three for me. After beating the women of the night, Big Bertha always decks me. I don't think I've ever seen past that level without cheating or watching the run through.

    Exactly the same here..!

Thanatos - the bit where the bees appear

Batty - round 3 (in the unlikely event I scrape past round 2)

Bruce Lee - About the 3rd screen underground (it's taken me years to be able to get this far  )

Ghosts N' Goblins - The 'building section' of the second level. I can usuallly make it this far without may problems, but I just can't make it past this part!

Airwolf - That first bastard wall! I only ever made it past that thing once and was gutted to find another one just past that!

Ninja - Just before the last idol as the game randomly crashes (I could probably beat this game otherwise)

Renegade - The last level with the 4 blokes with the blades. i did make it past them a few times, but not very often and always got shot by the main boss

In Treasure Island Dizzy, at the start you have to go right like you have to in all games, but I just can't time the jump right to avoid hitting the water at the wrong angle.

Thought of another: trying to make boiled slimies in Trap Door, I don't think I've ever managed it. In fact, once I've let the big green fire robot thing out, I can't get rid rid of him.

There's no "wrong angle", the water kills you if you don't have something to help yourself breathe underwater. You need to start by finding a way to climb the cliff to the left.

Shameeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee on you ! Listing Bruce Lee alongside tough games such as Airwolf and Ghosts n Goblins, you should be ashamed !

Interesting.. This level wouldnt need to be particularly difficult.
It is only important to quickly climb over the red platforms and keep them for returning:

Surely the hardest level in MM was 19 - Solar Power Genarator, folowing by Level 17 - The Warehouse.

I remember struggling forever with Big Bertha back in the days, until I found out how to deal with her: just move away from her diagonally so you get some space between until she makes her run. Then just be cool and wait for her to approch you and do a jump kick. It is not that hard!

But what is hard: the shooting boss at stage four, that one have I never be able to pass... ;)
