Aye what did we do before mobile phones? why all of a sudden are we all so important that we need to be contacted 24 hours a day. First thing I do in the morning is check that the bastard thing is off. Then I make sure I have a compass and a spirit level in the van, I just can't chance it otherwise.

    Hear hear !

When i'm on a long journey in the car i just turn it off, any business calls can wait till i'm there or if its the wife asking some mundane question again i'll talk to her once i get to the location.

My boss keeps asking me for my mobile number, its my own personal one. She can get me a work mobile if thats the case !

When i go on holiday i leave the mobile in the hotel (use it just for emergency) and gladly get away from computers/internet/messages for a week or two.

I assumed he had work gear in his van....might be difficult to carry it all along with the compass and spirit level.

When I was on holiday this year what did I see on the sun loungers of the beach. No not boobs, but blooming Ipad after Ipad that had more than likely been brought in the duty free lounge for an OTT price. Now if you saw row after row of people on the beach using a laptop, you might think f*ing crazy geeks cant they leave it alone for 5 mins.

Spirit level and compas? What would you need those for in this day and age. The iPhone has an apps for that they're called iLevel and iCum. Though iLevel only works on the new iPads as these are the only ones with a flat back

I wonder when Apple will get fed up with calling their products i this and i that.

Thanks for the info. I have decided to avoid the iPhone like a shitty stick. Too many crap battery stories (from various sources). Orange want me to pay another ?10 per month (at least) just to have a iPhone. Paying for the name, I think. I opted for a Samsung something or other smartphone thing that costs me no extra. So far, I am very impressed. I charged the battery 5 days ago and it still has 2 out of 5 bars left despite heavy usage. Result!

    Cheers, folks.

Get a phone with an Android OS such as the HTC Desire or Samsung Galaxy. I now have a touch screen Android phone and love it. Android market is a bit like Apple's app store. I've just downloaded a Spectrum emulator called Marvin for free. This one links up with the WOS game archive directly from within the emulator allowing me to download and play anything in the archive. Brill eh?

I wonder if Martijn minds all the apps using the archive in this way?

ZXDS allows over-the-air downloads from WoS without a web browser via a simple web service that is supported for certain emulators. I can't see it being a problem unless there is abuse or if there were some secret stash of illicit images somewhere on the site. Also, the images are tiny and a user is unlikely to load more than a handful of images in any given session. One view of a crash-page would be more than a dozen game downloads in terms of bandwidth.

It's great that the Android app store allows emulators. I have iXspectrum on the iPhone which supports downloading of images from WoS via embedded web browser. Great feature.

Given that he started a discussion a week or so back about building an 'official' way to do it, it seems not :-)

The usual anti-leeching measures still apply, of course.

Oh yeah, that will teach me not to read all the sections of the forum. :)

Funny cartoon of the attitude of some people towards iphone and apple in general. I know people like this. Quiet a few actually!

Why the **** you need a compass on a phone? :D

The compass is very handy, and unfortunately my older iPhone doesn't have one and it can be a problem.

The iPhone is something you carry around with you, and when you're in a foreign city and a bit lost, a compass will be very useful. The GPS alone will locate you but if you're at a confusing and badly signposted crossroads on foot, you have to walk for about two minutes before the GPS senses your direction of movement (phone GPS receivers aren't really all that fantastic). With the compass you instantly know which way you're pointing, and the phone can orient the map to show you, too.

I also have TomTom on my iPhone. Again, due to the fairly crap GPS receiver that phones tend to have, when you go around a tight bend, the TomTom app often gets a bit confused and ends up 'dead reckoning' straight on because the GPS isn't fast enough, or perhaps satellite coverage isn't ideal. If it can use compass input, it can immediately know you've rounded a tight bend and can figure out you're still on the correct road and not start trying to recalculate your route.

It about sums it up quite nicely.
