Football Management Games

edited August 2010 in Games
Can anyone recommend a decent footy management game? Football Manager 1+2 are far too easy and Football Director 1+2 are slow and dull. Just wondered if there were any good ones?

I like 'On the Bench' which is easy to use but possibly a bit dull. Soccer Boss is one that's half decent. You can download both from the archive.

first of all, what a great name!

As ZX said, I liked On the Bench, although it was a bit easy once u got going. Why don't you try The Double?
  • Thanks, i'll give them a try. I remember playing soccer boss many years ago!

    been meaning to check this.

Tracksuit was good used to play it frequently

one called The Double, I used to play. for some reason I think it makes you always be Gillingham, and Jimmy's Soccer Manager always makes you be Kettering

edit: didn't see jdanddiet already said the double

ah how could i forget Tracksuit! The best Footie sim on the speccy.

Kettering .. the team of choice for all soccer sims , you weren't dreaming it they appeared in many games

(and of course the mighty yeading.. which is near me)

Tracksuit Manager and The Doubke is where its at , althiugh starngely a lot of 'The Double' revolved around the player judging accurately the police presence for home games. And iirc couldnt you play manager only in Emlyn Hughes ?

and yes you did get chosen as Gillingham a lot , although the choice was random - but the Gills were by far the strongest team

Best 3 management games of all time are on Amiga though , in reverse order

    3.SWOS
    2.Dino Dini's Player Manager
    1. The largely unkown (but simply sublime) Super League Manager by Audiogenic

The boss was / is my favourite , mainly due to the Highest goalscorer chart and the european run if you manage to win the league .

World champions is good , but playing it last month it did seem very simple (not quite how i remembered).

For a cheapie - league challenge was quite difficult , in game graphics were a nice touch as well.

Also - the treble - ahead of its time , euro superleagues etc but very deep and much harder than most.

The Gills are my local team. I remember they came to my Primary School and all signed a football for a raffle. Some old woman won it, and my classmates' (Douglas) dad gave her ?10 for it. It was a lot of money back then. It was when Ossie Ardiles played for them too.

    Football Director Dull????

It's the best you get for the Spectrum, sorry ;)
  • I used to enjoy Football Director. I think i've been spoilt by all the great management games on the Amiga. I haven't got the patience for the 10 minute wait after each match.

I used to enjoy Kenny Dalglish Soccer Manager:

Although I do remember it being very easy after a while. Has there ever been a spectrum footy game with my beloved Morecambe in?

Football Director, speeded up on emulator.

    Perfecto.

There was one by Addictive called something like 'World Cup Football Manager' which had the gimmick of being able to give the players a half time 'pep talk' and this would affect performance during the game (or so the review said!).
There was one called 'League Challange' by Atlantis that was the hardest footie sim i've ever played. It seemed impossible to get off the foot of division 4, or maybe i'm just rubbish!

in Jimmy's Soccer Manager you choose what your players have for breakfast :-)

There is one that is constantly overlooked, but it spawned a whole generation of Play By Mail football management games. It's called UNITED by CRL. I'm not saying it was the best on the 8 bitters, but it sure developed way beyond anything else.

Can believe I almost the greatest multi-layer footie management game , old Big 'ead's Football Fortunes. Class bloke , class game - always sadly missed

I played that for a while, it had nice graphics but became quite 'samey' after a while. I soon stopped playing it.

I played the game (Kenny Dalglish Soccer Manager) yesterday for the first time in years. Your spot on about it becoming samey after a while. Took Telford to the top of English football in 5 seasons. The only good thing is the speed the game runs at, take out the hi-lights and a season takes very little time. The graphics are very nice indeed, strangely better than I remembered.

The best football managment game i ever played was Premier Manager 3 by Gremlin on the Amiga, nothing has ever beaten that one, it was brilliant.

There you go, fixed that for you there Dwayne!

Best football manager game across any platform/era has to be the current Football Manager game - (what used to be Championship Manager).

I know it's denied, but what about 1st Division Manager by Codemasters?
  • As the new football season draws ever closer i've been looking for the ultimate football management game. I've come to the suprising conclusion that the first Football Manager has never been beaten. It may be simplistic but it's so much fun. And while the graphics on the match highlights are crude it's still much preferable than watching a plain screen with a ticking clock. All the imitators that followed seem to have missed the fact that it was the highlights that made the game so enjoyable.
  • On The Bench was one of my favourites. It somehow kept me addicted for season after season. Like many of these footie manager sims it suffered from long pauses (especially after the first game of the season IIRC!) and benefits from emulator speedup. Watching the flashing 'GOAL!' message and then hoping the flickering would stop over your players registering a goal for your team was somehow mesmerising.

In some ways it was fairly realistic to the modern game. You think you've got enough money after a rather rash transfer and then your crowd riots and the police fine means the receivers come in and sell off one of your players at random :(

Also if you tried to flog a player and kept rejecting bids from other clubs, eventually you got the 'No enquiries' message and the player was mysteriously injured. Ouch.

No real player positions or tactics or any real skill involved but good all the same.

    Tea profit ?54 :p

Football manager 2010 has 3D match graphics. The annoyance that modern games have too many stats doesn't need to be a problem, just ignore them. The next person that says Football Manager 1982 was the best ever and cannot be beaten really does need to visit some form of psychiatrist.

my favourite (although is rather simple) still is Final Whistle Football, it's the game that introduced me to footy manager games! (and im still adicted after all this time!)

I'm not saying it's the best football management game just that it's one of the most enjoyable on the speccy despite being the first. My fave's are Ultimate Soccer Manager and Super League Manager on the Amiga. The modern Football Manager's are fine, although a bit too stat heavy for my liking. I just wish there was room for different titles like Super League Manager and On the Ball which tried a different approach to the genre.

Championship Manager on the Amiga was superb back in the day, used a few cheats to get tons of money and create my own 'Chelsea' squad.

Football Manager i played tons on the Speccy in the early years but its aged badly.

Player Manager by Anco to me was my favourite by far. Played that game A LOT, the player was about 80 years old but we had to keep him in the squad otherwise we couldnt play the games.

Back in the early 90's it was always Player Manager (and Kick off) over Sensible Soccer to me.

I played Football manager all through 82 and 83 then discovered SUPERLEAGUE by Cross software, it only had one division but there were 22 teams. From that point onwards I never went back to the Toms house despite a pleasing phase with FM2. Football Director was it from then on followed by On the Bench, The Double and I tried most of them to be honest, some were pretty horrendous. Once I'd got a PlayStation and tried Premier League Manager and ANCO's Player Manager there was absolutely no going back. As a genre I think its an important one to be up to date with although I'd dearly love a 1970s database for FM2010 as things were, now that would be great - Kevin Keegan available to buy from Scunthorpe for ?7,000 as he was. I've searched the net but no luck. I've def grown up with manager games more than any other type and I've loved every single please wait message.
