I don't think Football Manager's aged worse than any other Speccy game. The genre didn't really evolve until the 16 bit era. It was just a case of buy players with a higher skill rating, put them in the team and hope for the best.
I think Football Manager is so much better on an emulator so you can forward through the highlights a bit quicker and not wait 4 days for the division table to be sorted !
Do have fond memories of that game, i remember as a kid i was so addicted to football manager (and my dad) that he agreed to bring the Speccy on holiday. Can still remember a rainy night in Cornwall in our chalet playing footy manager !
I currently play Champ Manager 2006. I'm the manager of Airdrie Utd, we're doing okay(ish) we're mid table of division 2 but we're out of both cups!
I was sacked as manager of Albion Rovers in my last game, what an embarrasment!

I tried to persuade my dad to let me take my +2 on holiday to Dumfriesshire back in the day but he wouldn't let me. He wanted me to get out and enjoy myself, not sit in a caravan playing Operation Wolf!
Noticed something about Soccer Boss. The results are pre determined. I saved a snapshot on the main menu. I played a game and lost 4-3. I loaded up my saved game and switched my team around. Again lost 4-3. Loaded up again and this time put all 8 and 9 rated players in defence and lost 4-3.

When did the writers of CM leave Eidos to make Football Manager?
About 2005. If I remember correctly, Eidos kept the name rights for Champ Manager, but Sports Interactive had the intellectual rights to the database/game engine.
So SI renamed their version to Football Manager, of which 2005 was the first version, and hooked up with SEGA to get it distributed.
So, in reality, FM is the true succesor to Champ Man 4. "Champ Man" is a name only, different game engine underneath.

Make the switch to FM zx1...you'll not be disappointed!!
Back in the early 90's it was always Player Manager (and Kick off) over Sensible Soccer to me.
Hear Hear! Always found Sensi Soccers controls to be a bit cack when compared to Kick Off II. The ball always rolled away from you when you tried to dribble - which then kicked off the "crazy chicken" dance...you know the one where you run around the ball about 4 times to get it back under control for the next 1.3 seconds!?!?
KO II was more intuitive - better control on the dribble, better for shooting. You could take excellent swerving free-kicks. The only bit of KO II that I found annoying was penalties.
SWOS and Kick Off 2 are my two all time favourite games on the Amiga, add Emlyn Hughes, Match Day II and Football Manager on the Speccy and you have my top 5 of all time.
Nowadays I play a lot of SWOS online, and occasionally Emlyn Hughes on the Speccy as they are the two games I still enjoy the most.
I am one of the (sad? :)) people who bought quite a few the Cult management games and really liked them. Especially the one with the British Super League (I always sucked at that one, I could never get the good players) and the International Football game where experienced players were way better than skills.
On the PC I enjoyed Championship Manager 2, but never really played any of its sequels.
Football director's impossible. If you buy better players, the level automatically goes up and if you don't then you can't win a game!
Agreed. It was fairly innovative for a footie manager game at the time ie getting harder as you get better but it did kinda put you off improving your team and winning too much. I guess there must be a 'happy medium' algorithm that somebody has worked out :-?
Re. the Sensible Soccer vs Kick Off debate I was definitely in the Kick Off camp. There just seems more to it for me. Helluva learning curve at the start though - like pinball!
Aye, you had to lose a certain amount of games before you could manually reset the difficulty level to easy again. Surely there is someone dull enough to trawl through the Basic and find the toggle.

In any case Football Director rules all!

I'm going to try that later on.............

I reckon SWOS/Sensible Soccer is to me what Robocop is to some people - it just never settled with me. Kick Off just ticked all the boxes.
Sensi had all the real names though, which was good.
Robocop, for me, was a piece of cake...I could clock it many times without losing a single life. I know some people really struggle with it though.
