Since when I was posting on CSS, I noticed, that word "Mandic" must sound for native englishs somewhat funny or what, also in this thread there was mention about it, so I am wondering, what's so funny on that word ? It becomes from former Yugoslavian territory, where it is regular surname.
F.E. for me an english words "Kilby" or "Whithby" sound so dumb, that I am laughing on that everytime I spot it...:)
I dont think its anything to do with his name. Just the fact that he asked Martijn 'what have you ever done for the Spectrum scene ?' so everyones been laughing at that.

I'm looking at it from an English perspective and how the surname could be pronounced. I'm sure your Yugoslavian is far superior to mine and you are correct.
"Whithby" and "Kilby" is funny only when you read it as it is written, in fact I don't know how it has to be pronounced, I suppose "Wit-bay", but then it's not funny, I many times do not bother how to pronounce some english names, but when I read 'as is' Whithby, it's incredibly childish funny :)

But please explain why its funny, i'm interested to know why. I presume its something in your language ? I mean you can see why 'Mandic' is funny to some people, like i say most people know the word 'man' in english and also 'dic' (obviously missing the k but you get the joke)

It evokes me some fairytale being from primeval forest, some terribly moving dwarf, or what, some guy that is so terrible, that it's funny.
btw: Mandic is pronounced "Man-djitch" and in slavic languages the word "man" doesn't evoke a bloke, it doesn't mean anything.
When I was a baby I lived in a street named Crotch Crescent. I have an uncle that lives in a cottage in small village, its in a cul-de-sac is called Bell End.
Not so funny but I used to live next to a town here in Texas named 'Cut and Shoot'.
It got it's name after the locals had a dispute so a town hall meeting was called and everyone showed up with knives and guns (hence cut and shoot) and violence ensued.
Wiki says different.. (and a citation is noted) but I lived 5 miles from it and everyone around there says it was reference to the knives and guns..not what wiki gives which is this....

Near where i live is a place called Clitheroe, i think the way i pronounce it to the locals isnt the right way to say it judging by their looks.
