How is that a direct attack? That's my opinion of Asbergers...rightly or wrongly. You've chosen to read into that and put your own personal spin on it. It was just one opinion. I agree though, that it IS an an attack on Asbergers, so in retrospect, I could have been more sensitive in my wording.
At the risk of disagreeing with foggy, I'd say it wasn't a direct attack.
Rather, it was an impersonal attack, which is worse. You didn't even stop to think that there might be some actual human people upon whom your opinions might reflect. You just took a section of the population and declared them all to be terrible.
Also for what it's worth I apologise to everyone for my language in #31; it was unnecessary. I of course stand by the basic sentiment therein expressed.
Looks like a personal opinion to me. No names were given. Otherwise many criticisms about today's society would equally be personal attacks on people who read this forum who happen to belong to the section of society that is being criticized. Remember that the next time someone criticizes immigrants, chavs, dolescum, etc, etc...
Being an immigrant, chav or dolescum isn't a medical condition. Aspergers is and the initial and subsequent posts indicated that people with aspergers are running rings around professionals in order to get away with being idiots.
Aspergers isn't funny, and it's not often mis-diagnosed (if anything its the other way round) and to people living with it, or with someone who has it, its a nightmare at times. Especially in children as they can't understand why they are different.
To top it off, it is known that several forum members have aspergers, so the initial post (to me) *did* look like an indirect attack.

You are right, I didn't stop to think and I can appreciate why you took exception to my opinion. Conversly though, you seemed to think nothing about launching an abusive attack...but probably you were angry and we all say bad things in anger. If you would delete that attack to a blank page I will be satisfied and then I will apologise to you for upsetting you.
We have a lot of new "mental diseases" today. Dislexia, discalulia, adhd, narcissm and so on
What really annoys me about the 'clinicalisation' of abnormality is the way it encourages people with these conditions to look upon themselves as somehow unhealthy. Personally I am always extremely careful not to refer to Asperger's as a 'disease', nor use the verb 'to suffer from' in relation to it. It's all very well to quantify deviation from the norm, but the minute you suggest that it's in any way a form of illness, you create serious problems.
That is, of course, a far cry from suggesting that Asperger's doesn't exist.

I've lost count of the number of times I've raised an eyebrow on this forum. Aspergers isn't funny, but neither is any social/medical.psychiatric condition...that hasn't stopped those veins of discussion though. Sounds like you have a personal reason for your defence here. I wish mods had been so vociferous just once out of the many occasions that TS/TV/Trannies have been the butt of jokes..but no eh. But see, I ain't made of paper and I DO have a sense of humour, even at my own expense. It rarely bothers me. There is no justice *falls on knees and prays to god*
Anyhoo, enough of this. Completely fed up of it all now.
I think we need to start raising the threshold of when an opinion is considered "offensive". With so many thin-skinned people around, this place is starting to turn into Have Your Say.
We're now in the situation where non-doctors are judging whether or not Asperger's is a mental illness or purely behavioural - something which not all qualified doctors agree upon - and then judging others based upon their own unqualified opinion.
And like Have Your Say, only the loudest voices will "win" the "argument" here.
You are right, I didn't stop to think and I can appreciate why you took exception to my opinion.
I'm glad to hear that. It's also nice to know that we can have arguments on the Internet and come out the other side being polite to one another :)

I don't require an apology in the first place, as I was not so much upset as concerned that you held the opinions you did.
I merely intend that my comments remain on the record. I would never attempt to redact my words as it is an act of hubris to try to hide the past. For philosophical reasons, I prefer that the record remain complete.
If you do not wish to see it, you need only refrain from visiting that page.
Also put me on ignore if you want. It doesn't bother me.
Now to reply to the OP (after a thread-derail this spectacular, I feel it owed).
My understanding is that a geek is one who seeks knowledge at the expense of social stature - a conscientious student, for instance. The term 'nerd' is specific to computer fanatics.
I, of course, consider myself to be both, and I am under no illusions about the paucity of my social skills.

yeah ive reported you an polomint.
extra snout for me. :D
I said it already in Andrew Owen thread, but the thread is gone so I'll repeat.
We have a lot of new "mental diseases" today. Dislexia, discalulia, adhd, narcissm and so on
Check this manual:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diagnostic_and_Statistical_Manual_of_Mental_Disorders#DSM-II_.281968.29
1980 - 494 pages
1994 - 886 pages
and it's growing :)
I'd say that nothing happens without any reason. New diseases - new money (therapies, medicines).
We don't have drunkards now but alcoholics. We don't have unpleasant people but socially handicapped or what ever you call it.
And we shouldn't treat their actions in moral terms. When they behave bad, we can't be angry as it's their illness and it makes them justified.
Really?
;)
thats copyright theft.

Everyone who doesn't hold such an opinion about any section of society, please raise your hand.
OI, GRASS !!!

That is because we nerds have nothing better to do with our time :)
Hence the very existence of Chit Chat.
*raises hand*
Ooh, hang on. Do Star Trek fans count as a section of society?
*lowers hand*
Move along, these aren't the droids you're looking for....
Hmm
I'd never put anyone on ignore. Might as well not be on a forum.
Personally, I think anyone who likes Jar Jar Binks should be forced through a cheese grater. These people are pure evil and should be exterminated.
Oh, I think I would like to put some on ignore (not you), but it can be fun reading their comments though...
Indeed. Though I'm not sure there is anyone who likes Jar Jar Binks.
They tend to be people born *after* Live Aid. Bastards.
Me'sa likes Jar Jar Binks :D
*gets coat*
Jar Jar Binks' Mum?
Nah even she thinks he's a twat :D
