I am in a tiny minority that like the second album but never understood the fuss about the first one.
I was late coming to the first album, wasnt super keen on guitar music then, raised on a lot of the 80's synth stuff. But i started listening to it and it blew me away, they werent all 'gloss' with make-up on, over the top 80's clothes etc. They seemed more 'normal' and people i could relate to more back then rather than some guy with eye-liner and a dodgy quiff.
Think the first album is an all time classic, so many great tunes on it. I'm gutted i missed out on all the hype/release of the first album but quickly became a fan when i listened to it a year or two later.
The huge 2nd album by Stone Roses with all the hype etc reminds me of In Utero by Nirvana. I know that wasnt their second album but they were under a ton of pressure after Nevermind to release a great follow up. Think In Utero was pretty good, had some good tunes on it, nothing like Nevermind but still makes a nice change listening to it.
I'm with mile, I like the stone roses but all that Brit Pop malarkey was foooookin' sheeeeeeeeiiiite ar kid :D
What did you like in the mid 90's ?
Must admit early 90's i loved dance music, some great tunes back in the early years but then i went into guitar music big time.
Loved the Britpop years, one minute Top of the pops is full of Stock/Aiken/Waterman crap. Suddenly it was guitar bands all over the place. Sleeper, Dodgy, Suede, Radiohead, Shed Seven, Manson, Super Furry Animals, Charlatans, Cast, Elastica, Gene, Blur, Oasis etc. Some great bands in those years.
Most musics crap nowadays, every song is by someone 'feat' someone else. I liked the 90's indie music as it was 'normal clothes'. Didnt have to wear a gold chain like i thought i was from South Central LA, or wear my jeans by my knees etc.
Thought the 80's was full of a lot of great music, same for the 90's, the 00's have been very poor though apart from a few bands.

do you pick all your musical tastes on the outfits?
i was into heavy rock, and bar the odd band tshirt, i was allowed to pretty much wear what i wanted too.
I'm in an even smaller minority that thought Radiohead's The Bends was magnificent but Ok Computer and everything after is pretentious wank.
I was similar to you but one album later. OK Computer i really liked, some classics on that with Karma Police and No Surprises. But after that Kid A and the others i thought were very poor
do you pick all your musical tastes on the outfits?
Ha ha no but i find it funny when you see some kid from Surrey walking round like hes a gangsta and he walks up the drive of his mum and dads big house and hes in private school.
Hip-Hop (not the gangsta stuff all the wiggers listen to), D n' B, Hardcore (punk not the techno shite all the boy racers listen to). I've liked Hip-Hop since I was about 3 years old though, I'm not gonna change my tastes now. Although I listen to older stuff, can't stand all this shite with the vocorders and techno type beats with some arse shouting "yo yo! move it move it!" over the top of it. I seriously think there may have only been about 3 half-decent Hip-Hop albums came out after about 1996? Hardcore always comes a close second to Hip-Hop, been listening to that since I was a nipper as well.
I've always worn baggy pants since I was a kid, can't get into those bloody skintights can't understand why anyone would want to wear pants you have to howk out of your arse crack every 5 minutes, and cut the circulation off to your nads. really annoyed me when I was in the last year of school and all the posh kids suddenly started talking gangsta and wearing pants 15 times larger than mine (I said I wore baggy not huge! I emphasize that! The crotch of my pants is where it belongs!), all listening to Onyx and Ice Cube and whatever Yo MTV Raps told them was cool.
Laugh at me all you like for this but it's better than all those clones with the floppy beatex hairdo's copying bands from the 60's, and the Happy Mondays all over again :p
Yeah on one hand i wouldnt want tight fitting pants as you say which you have to 'hook out' but on the other extreme i wouldnt want super baggy jeans which are halfway to my knees.
But yeah back in the Yo MTV Raps days i used to like that stuff a lot, Public Enemy were superb back in the day, NWA etc. Still didnt dress like i was in LA though, even though i could have as it was the 'mean streets' of Berkshire ;)
The worst ones though are the kids who think theyre so 'gangsta' and like you say theyre just spoilt brats.
But really did like the indie scene in the 90's as it got rid of all the Rick Astley/Kylie type crap, clothes seemed much more 'normal' and accessible to everyone.
I'm not a huge fan of Coldplay but they obviously are very talented. Kings of Leon i really liked but their last album was way too commercial, hopefully the follow up will get rid of some of the newbies who dont realise they've released more than one album
I seriously think there may have only been about 3 half-decent Hip-Hop albums came out after about 1996?
agreed. that whole sound seemed to disappear when puff daddy started getting big. don't know if he's entirely to blame but at least partly
MF Doom albums from the early 2000's are good. Insight "Blast Radius" and Y Society's album are the last couple of good hip hop albums I heard. the mainstream has gone totally crap
agreed. that whole sound seemed to disappear when puff daddy started getting big. don't know if he's entirely to blame but at least partly
Same here, p diddley or whatever his name is this week ruined rap for me. Also the next generation of rap fans who tried dressing like theyre from Compton and not Windsor. You see way too many Ali G's nowadays
Not a fan of all their songs but theres a fair few classics Morrisey and co created.
Yeah im a fan,i knew "this charming man" but when i got the two "best" compilations i liked them,"there is a light that never goes out" is a swansong for the band on verge of break up.
I like the Smiths' music, but can't really get with Morrissey's voice. bit of a 'marmite' voice for me (which is strange because I actually like marmite :-))
a band out now I really like is The Sums, which is Digsy (of 'Digsy's Dinner's fame) band. ironically they sound better than any Oasis stuff of the last 10-12 years
I dont believe in this boll0cks that its personal reasons that bands dont get back together, its all down to ego and money, instance it would be cheaper to hire session musicians and sing your old hits than paying your former band members above session musician rates.

I was counting Doomsday as one of the 3 ;)
Thinking back it makes you wonder if Biggies death was orchestrated to give talentless rappers a chance to get famous. I never liked Biggie that much back then, but some of his stuff is genious. Listen to the 12' bootleg version of Cunt Renaissance by him and RA it's friggin' awesome :D

I do love some of the titles, eg 'you're the one for me fatty'. However i wouldnt try doing that at a karaoke and dedicating it to someone. When i did that before it backfired bigtime.

Ah the double meaning songs, like "some girls are bigger than others",or "girlfriend in a coma".

biggie - ready to die is great , but it's also the first album with puff daddy on it you can hear him going "uh" in the background on a few tracks for no reason.he's on one of the videos as well cant remember which one. I think he latched on to biggie to further his own career. and RA should release that "bloody apes" album, I know for a fact that all the masters are intact but for some reason only a crap bootleg has ever surfaced

I've still got the soundtrack to the film 'Juice', some great great tunes on there. My favourite 2Pac tune is still 'brendas got a baby'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wl54ABY8VgY
They should re-release this in the UK and rename it 'most chavvy girls have a baby...'
Unfortunately Kylie and the Rickster are back!

Not really a fan but i liked a few songs off their Queen is Dead album. Is that what it's called? It's been a while!
Ah the double meaning songs, like "some girls are bigger than others",or "girlfriend in a coma".

Yes,first heard it was shocked,it was morrisey singing in a forced high tone instead of his soft voice.
Mo money mo problems
