Spectrum 'Arkanoid' music

I was under the impression that I just copied the music from the arcade game onto the Speccy which was then put into the Spectrum conversion. Having been messing about with MAME during the last few days & playing the arcade version the music that plays on the intro screen isn't there on the arcade rom I have.

Anyone know if there was a version of the arcade game with that music on? Any other versions feature the same tune? I can't find it anywhere else? Or did I actually write the tune myself?

Any help appreciated! :)

dunno. but i remember i would let the speccy play it while i was doing other things. i quite liked it.

it definatly is a cover.. erm I can't say from where as I played it on pc and also atari 8 bit.

have you been into the options , tab ? see if you turn on the music there.

also did u do 64 graphics, or a namesake? maybe Mr Galway's version you used.. like fro / jof did with errm cobra.

I have hear that tune before on arkanoid though.. and today is the first time I've played the speccy one

See, a few years back I was contacted bya Polish folk group called Slainte who said they wanted to cover it (!!) I wrote back I said that I didn't write the tune myself but just copied it from an arcade game and that I didn't mind but the permission really wasn't mine to give.

Then I got an email with an mp3:

I'm just wondering if I actually wrote this myself. I always thought I'd copied it, but can't find the original that I copied it from. It was over 20 years ago!

That Jones was the other Mark Jones who worked on the 64 version.Mark K Jones.

The Spectrum tune wasn't from Martin Galway. The 64 uses different intro music.

Also, when I did the Spectrum music I had not seen ANY other version of the game other than the arcade version. All the other conversions came later (except the 64 version which was being written in-house the same time as the Spectrum version.The Amstrad was done out of house IIRC)

I'm 90% you copied it.. but been there myself 2 times, once with a bassline that sounded like blue monday.. and a piano melody that sounded like massive attack aggh!!!

reyn's remakes I have a lot of time for as he plays all the instruments on them.

Ok well if I copied it then the original version must be out there somewhere and it MUST have been on an arcade version of the game because that was the ONLY version of the game I had seen at that point. So why's it not on the rom I have for MAME?

Is your ROM labelled as a bootleg or prototype perhaps?

Mmmm could be. I've been sure for years that I just copied it, I just can't find the source. The tune is on the Amstrad version, but that was produced out of house and behind the Spec & 64 versions.It also plays at the end of the NES version. I have never played that, let alone got to the end. Anyone know the release date of the NES version?

I'm also 90% certain I did copy it, now I need to find out where from.

you lot had access to the service modes of the arcade machines? so maybe you lot got a tape of the audio or the notes themselves??

To this day, I still can't get over the audacity of Melbourne House trying to screw cash out of us for using Music Box. There was absolutely no mention of prohibition of usage in commercial products in the instructions, on the product or in the advertising.

Its like writing a game with Zeus assembler and Design Design wandering up demanding money for the use of the assembled code.

I guess it was just a case of calling our (Ocean's) bluff.

I would have done the double bluff.. since it mentions it no where :) and then got MH to pay my court costs :D

All I know is that the Amstrad CPC version was the first version reviewed in C&VG. Maybe this was because you remember wrong or perhaps Ocean thought that version was very good and sent it for a first review?

I'm sure I've heard the same tune played on the title screen of another conversion, but I can't seem to find what version it is...I thought it was the Atari ST one, but it doesn't seem to have a tune at the title???

I think it's played in one of Arkanoid's sequels somewhere too, but I could be imagining that...at least you've found it's in the arcade one somewhere!

also homer simpsons fav game... arkanoid 2... revenge of DOH! there was an arkanoid rip off on amiga.. reminded me of shizoids , well the title on speccy

the cheat for the c64 one is "debbie s" in the hiscore table.. almost as memorable as the monty on the run c64 cheat.. hiscore table.. "I wanna cheat"
