Audacity problem

I've recently installed a new version of Audacity for Windows 7 as i'm currently converting my old records/tapes to mp3.
When i tried to record a winamp file (as a test) i went into the preferences menu but on the tab that detects the recording device it said 'no device detected'. Could it because i'm using onboard sound? It should display 'PortAudio Audio I/O' but dosen't.
When i try to record i get the error 'Error opening device. Please check input device settings and project sample rate'. I had a look through the menus and the online manual but couldn't find anything.

That is mad! Last night I downloaded and installed the latest beta of Audacity (1.3.something*) for Windows 7. I wanted to record Spectaculator playing a TZX file and I had exactly the same problem.

I don't know if it is my new Dell computer or Windows 7 OS but until I actually plugged in a jack into Line In, the soundcard device didn't appear. Until that point I still didn't get any devices and I got exactly the same message (e.g. when you press R to record)

Suffice to say, there doesn't appear to be a "Stereo Mix" option which previously allowed me to record "whatever the selected sound card was playing".

Not got to the bottom of it yet.

    *It was 1.3.12 (Beta)

It's version 1.3.12. As it's in beta it could be a bug but i thought it was because i'm still using onboard sound on my pc at the moment.
It worked fine in my old pc but that was a version for xp though.

I downloaded audacity last week because I wanted to record some live sound. but there was no 'input device' selector, even where it said there should be one in the 'help' topics. dunno if that's relevant to what you're doing but I thought it was odd...

From the Audacity download faq for the beta.
    Select inputs in Devices Preferences:
in Windows XP and earlier, recording inputs such as "microphone" or "stereo mix" could be selected in the Audacity Mixer Toolbar. Currently, the newer audio API in both Windows Vista and 7 means that inputs must be selected in Audacity at Edit > Preferences: Devices.

I hate the new audio changes made to win 7 and win Vista. There was no need for it, and absolutely no improvement brought about by the new design.

I can add weight to the fact that it isn't Audacity that is the culprit.
If you load up Windows 7's "Sound Recorder" it also fails to load because if the same problem: "An audio recording device cannot be found".

So we can sum this up by saying Microsoft have an audacity problem for fixing things that were not broken.
