The Pope's aide says that the UK is like a "third world country".

Well, Vatican City is like the backstage of a Gary Glitter gig.

If I was to insist that my house was a country and I was the absolute leader, people would call me a whackjob. Mr Popey gets an invitation to meet the Queen :-o

    :-)

he's head of state! (the Vatican) - enough ignorance.

    Try the Lateran treaty instead!

It's a political treaty, defining the Vatican state.

Yeah that comment from the Popes aide was stupid, sure he got a ticking off later. He must have gone to the Prince Philip school of charm.

Be interesting to see if the crowds are as bad as rumoured

I heard that he was part of the Hitler Youth (doubt if he had a choice to be fair), but didnt realise he actually did fight in WW2 as part of an anti-aircraft unit according to Aunty Beeb...

Who to, the lord himself ?

He has to be the most boring pope EVER, I sat through the whole thing, out of interest, to see if he was going to say anything of importance, but he just mumbled his way through the whole thing, without an ounce of interest. It was funny though to see the many cut aways to the audience, where people were openly asking each other, " what did he just say " and being answered by shrugs of the shoulders.
Every time I read that the oldest person in the world has died, I have to do a quick check to see it isn't ME..........

But to be fair its a huge news story at the moment. The BBC/ITV/Sky news have also featured stories about the negativity about the pope, why our taxes should pay partly for his trip and of course the child abuse scandals.

Its not like people have just created a thread to be controversial or upset you, but its a major news story at the moment.

Be a bit unfair if people can comment on other news stories but arent allowed to talk about major issues about the church if it upsets one person ?

The TV channels havent censored any of the topical debate programs on TV the last few days, Newsnight and others have been talking about his visit and the controversy etc. Dont think stuff like that should be censored.

No ones mocking your views, a lot of people have stated fact about the Pope and theres some huge issues currently going on in the catholic church with a whole range of issues. Cant sweep them under the carpet and say 'nope cant discuss those'.

Granted but i dont see many people complaining when someone criticises George Bush or Tony Blair with some childish name calling.

Plus the nazi comments, well he was in the hitler youth/took part in WW2 so that word is 'true' to some extent ? I wouldnt say he is a nazi but he 'was' a nazi many many years ago.

But if we cant call heads of state names then i hope people report stuff about other heads of state such as Mugabe/Obama and others. And to be fair guesser didnt call the Pope a whackjob.

I didn't call the Pope a whackjob... I said I would be called one if I declared my house a country. On the existing evidence (all the people who have declared their house a country and been called whackjobs) I believe that to be factually accurate

It's simple... The pope is nuts... Deal with it, :)

It's a political treaty, defining the Vatican state.

I'm sorry, but the Lateran Treaty does not establish the statehood of the Vatican; it is merely an acceptance by Italy of the Vatican's independence.

The only thing that establishes the Vatican as a state is that other states officially recognise it as a state. Indeed, this is true of all states, which leads to some circularity.

Also, I am of the opinion that the Vatican ought not to be recognised as a state; it is essentially a religious organisation (and a rather corrupt and malicious one at that), and allowing its claim to statehood just encourages the buggers (and possibly also the buggerers - oops, not allowed to talk about that in case ghbearman is 'offended'!)

Seriously though, the catholic church is a despicable organisation and I am ashamed that my country affords it such a high level of official recognition.

As for us paying for the pope's visit... Grr; very grr.

One also wonders about the constitutional position wrt. the Act of Settlement etc.; should we denounce the queen and government as papist traitors? :P
