Rescue?!!

edited September 2010 in Games
I had a look at the top100 games and saw this one...is it really so good? I have never heard of it and it only has 1 reference in a big magazine getting just a 7.
I will try it later today to check it out

  • I think it was in the YS top 100 games. I've been meaning to play it but haven't got around to it.

Its a half decent maze type game (Atic Atac kinda thing) and is alright but i would be very surprised to see it placed so high.

Reminds me of that game YS raves about, All or nothing which is very high up on their all time lists, always thought it was an april fools...

3rd on the YS list (?!)!)

Robocop seems to be on the righthand list twice?

I'm going to give them both a go later today and will post what I think too.

Nice sport ! Should PM Martijn

Actually just seen it in YS...

Looks like some mistake in the final issue as Robocops listed twice.
  • Just had a go on Rescue. Good game. Some nice touches eg deflecting shots, the fact that you can destroy most things (on purpose or by accident!), lockable/unlockable doors, damage to the walls etc.

I've not got that far into it, but I like. As psj said it's a bit like Atic Atac, but less frantic.

Tip - don't go right at the start or it's game over straight away!

Rescue is one of my faves, played it tons when I got it.

Trying to rescue the scientists from the dangerous left hand side of the map... blocking them in to try and stop the tanks getting them... teleporting around trying to snatch all the experiments first...

The oddest game I ever played of it was when I spent ages outside the ship and came back to find that an alien had eaten all of the take-off panels, so I couldn't launch!

Rescue belongs in the list. It really is very clever and only appeared on the Speccy. Thumbs up to YS for noticing it and shame on the other mags for not.

Could never quite get all the scientists but the game does reward you if you still manage to get a decent amount in suspended animation and discover the ultimate experiement or whatever.

I still await a sequel. If anyone's interested, I did a review for Retro Gamer's website about a year ago explaining it all to the best of my abilities... (http://www.retrogamer.net/show_image.php?imageID=3346&page=1). Probably made it sound more complicated than it actually is mind! I think I wrote that review just because I wish it was more recognised as I can't think of a game quite like it. Very playable, even today.

..Wow... there are others out there who think alike!!!... Yes, I am a great fan of Rescue, and am not the least bit surprised that it made it into the top 100 list... It has everything:

    - great sound,
    - decent graphics
    - strategy,
    - arcade gaming,
    - destructable enviroments,
    - variety in gameplay, endings, and situations...

..its a pure gem of a game, that deepens and grows on you the more you play... You can't really get it the first time you play, but it grows as you become more familiar...

...many a time, Iv wished this game had a sequal - its screaming out for one!!!... It had elements that I guess many superior gaming systems now take for granted (graphics, sound, attention to detail, etc)... For that reason, I don't see it making a big impact on a PC, as a remake, unless it was surprisingly more detailed, with more added... A remake on the spectrum, ironically though, could make a big splash... Iv thought about this lots, and consider this as one of those games I would rewrite if ever I was to be reborn as a talented z80 machine code programmer in some other life:

    - 128k ONLY

    - Atmosphere: horror/suspense (influences from AlienBreed, Paradroid (Amiga), anything that makes you jump)

    - 8 directional movement

    - variety of weapons

    - Id replace the lunatic like running around of the scientists with something more like Halflife (ie: touch scientist, hit action button to say, "follow me" - and then he'll follow, until you do the same again to tell him to stop),

    - Id alter the graphics to be pure topdown, rather than false 3D (tough decision, but part of my attempt to make the graphics more serious and less cartoony),

    - Gore!!!... Id add gore and blood stains to the walls behind any organic bodies shot

    - Beef up the sound effects & graphics (something serious, like Alien Breed)

    - Add more maps (multiple floors)

    - Variety in aliens (perhaps something more like Paradroid from the Amiga)(Hell, maybe add some paradroid like use & abuse of droids to add to the strategy),

    - Plot: Id have a timer working in the background which triggers off various 'events' that help the story unfold as you play (eg: security doors and defences suddenly trigger, minor explosions as raiders try to take over ship, arrival of raiders, decompression of ship, etc, etc, release of experimental organic lifeforms around the ship, etc, etc, leading up to ultimate destruction of ship, if alien raiders can't acquire the experiment)

    - Extend the variety of endings:
eg1: Change all or nothing endings into something more detailed: Fuel consumption might create endings like this:
    - Empty?.. : Insufficient power to initiate take off

    - NearFull : Ship stranded in space but close enough for Escape Pod
to make final leg, but Scientist at random chosen to
accompany you... ie: random culling of cargo
ie: slim random chance of success only

    - Full?... : Then successful take off

    - UnderHalf : Separate from Station,
but a sitting duck to Raiders, who destroy ship

    - OverHalf : Stranded in deepspace,
All die of life support failure and freeze in space
eg2: Make one of the random scientists a traitor, involved in killing off his kin if he is left alone with them...
eg3: add interaction/dialogue with scientists, that effect their levels of cooperation/endings

...yes, thats quite a lot, and it shows that I have too much time on my hands, daydreaming...!!!!

Man, you've added a hell of a lot there! I'd have been happy with different maps to be honest, even a level editor would have been amazing. Perhaps a timer before the station explodes - There's already a timer really as you rush around trying to save scientists before they're murdered.

Rescue 2 could have been a great full price game though. We'll never know how well it did and the lack of coverage in the press is a real shame. Comes with the budget territory I suppose.

Rescue is one of my favourite spectrum games of all time, i must have played it 2000 times by now!
It has nice but slighly flickering colour graphics (always a bonus) but is a simple maze game, just watch out for the silver coloured tanks, they only die if you bomb them.
    The trouble with tribbles is.......

That's a very nice and informative review you've written, much clearer than most other gaming reviews on the 'net. It does seem strange that a game like this should have gone so unnoticed back then, but nowadays it's much more common for good, original games to get sidelined by the mainstream clones that roll off the production lines.
