I wanted to call my middle daughter Arwen from Lord of the Rings but the wife wouldn't have any of it.. We compromised and had it as her middle name instead. Hermione is actually the wife's grandmother's name.

My wife was coming out with some wacky names, seems to be all the rage at the moment. The school register must be bizarre coming out with all these 'new' type of names nowadays !

Managed to put my foot down and choose a traditional name, it was close though !

Just think you have to think of the kid at school and its life in general. Some names i've heard are ridiculous, we went to look at a nursery recently and some of the kids names on the pictures etc were amusing.

The missus wanted the name Freya but i dont know, sounds a bit 'scandinavian', wasnt keen. Apparently its a very common name nowadays !

Thanks and good luck to you both as you're next.

By the way the secret to a good name is 4 sylables spread over a first name, middle name and sirname. All of those strong sounding famous names seem to be four syllables. It does not matter how the syllables are distributed as long as you use four.

    John Paul Satre,
    John Luke Pickard,
    Harry Connic Junior,
    Jerry Lee Lewis.

I can't think of better examples at the moment due to lack of sleep.

Freya is very common. Personally I don't think its a bad name but I would not be inclined to choose it. The best way to choose names is to think if you were introducing yourself to others in a pub what would you be happy being called.

Hello pleased to meet you my name is eh... I'm afraid... 'Rainbow-moonshine pixy stardust'.

Ha yeah i'm with you on that. The missus was coming out with some crazy names, kept saying to her 'are you serious ? imagine the poor kid at school. I'm not Chris Martin you know !'

Think everything thinks theyre a popstar and just want to copy them and choose some bizarre name.

This is 100% the truth, my mates a Star Wars nut and his two kids are called Luke and Leia ! Hmmm !

I did come up with a few strange ones and sometimes made up ones too, but I was kidding just to see my wifes reactions; for example. Methuselah, Guglungda, Epaltha, Gandalf, Halibert, Rogan. However, by that time we had already settled on George.

I dont know if its my mums age, but she suggested some awful ones, Fleur, Jean Piere and other stereo-typical frenchy sounding names. Fine if your French, but not if your born in Wales. 'Allright butties.. I'm Jean Piere and I'm from Carrghghdeef'.

I've had a few people (old people !) mention about 'terry towling' or something. Basically not disposable nappies, you get some towels which you use for nappies which you then wash over and over. Sod that ! Its not the year 1955 ! Disposable for me 100% !

I mean its one thing doing a nappy, then having to wash/rinse a soiled nappy, sod that !!

    Congrats Scottie!

psj - so using less energy and costing less money (even getting a subsidy) is a bad idea? And for the record, you get disposable degradable liners that flush down the loo and you don't have to do the laundry yourself, some councils offer a wash & return service.

Yeah ! I've already had one hippy moan to me about the environment etc. (He uses his car and not public transport yet bleats on to me about using disposables !).

    I'm quite happy using disposables.
