Exterior painting tips?

edited October 2010 in Chit chat
Here's the question for all you handy-men types, of which I'm not! :D

Masonry painting ahoy!

But can I used oil-based primer/sealer on a wall which is going to be painted a few days later with water-based paint? It sounds dodgy to me, but that's what the geezers at the DIY place have sent me. Any ideas?

You'd better call a professional, Graz...

That's what I'd do as I'm not a handyman either...

    I found this site:

Maybe someone in the forum over there can help?

I used proper masonry paint on the brickwork (to 'tidy' where the damproof people had been on the outside)

I painted the stone window sills just with a decent gloss paint (was Crown country beige actually) , although I had my doubts it is still good after 3 years, although I did take my time and got a decent coating on it.

I just used the masonry paint direct to the wall, without primer/undercoat, perhaps I was wrong, but it is still fine 8 years later. When I did it, I quickly realised that shopping around was vital, as many places had special offers on the paint, sometimes buy one, get one free ( or half price ) or buy two, get a third free ( which is basically the same deal ). The prices do seem to vary from place to place as well. They are otherwise very expensive, and you always use more than you imagine you will need !

Yeah, that's always been my motto as well, but now we're trying to sort out the mess made by 3 different so-called professionals! No more. Gonna have to do it ourselves. Spent thousands on them just doing a bit of guttering! :S Check-a-trade are useless. The whole network is run by cowboys!

Ooh, ta. I'll have a lil look on there as well.

Gonna try this oil-based primer on a test-patch first and see if it takes the water-based paint afterwards. Gonna be doing the whole house after the front wall is done, so we've gotta get it right. Yup, Greykey. I may need more paint!

PS: Did I mention that I get vertigo?! *gulp* May send the wife up the ladder for that bit.

The thing about sites like Check A Trade is that traders have to pay to be on there, and there are many sites like it. Basically the firms who overcharge and take the piss out of customers are the ones that can afford to get onto sites like this, the honest hard-working smaller outfits don't get a look in.... but then that's when real word of mouth rep is king, because you can't buy that no matter how well off they are.

True, very true. Does not seem to go very far with coating. Although using good quality stuff hopefully means it will not need doing again for ages.

Just don't look up her skirt, or you will be wearing a tin !

Anyway people with bad backs should not be up ladders, it is too easy to fall off. Like the time I was working up a ladder outside my house, and I stepped back to admire my work, whilst I was falling, I realised I was originally up a ladder. Even our window cleaner fell off his ladder once, he was off of work for over a year, and he had been doing it as a job for over 30 years !

Phone up your local N.A.C.R.O. office and see if they operate a painting and decorating sceme in your area, they will do it for you for cost, and the garden as well if they have a gardening scheme.

A dodgy back and a dodgy beard, and your hair is a little long ! And you are thinking of decorating soon, probably painting or something similar, is that your dog, or the next door neighbours ?
Is your cough any better now ? I am getting the name Monica, or a name beginning with M.

    I am a Psychic;-)
