Castelvania Aria of Sorrow

edited October 2010 in Chit chat
For years I've heard that this game for GBA was amazing... I never got to buy it (a guy at a store onde tricked me to buy ISS instead... and I've never seen it again on sale).

I'm finally playing it on emulator (all of the castlevanias for GBA) and it's a really good game!

any one has any tips for it?

Is that the one where you play as Alucard? Or the one set in the future? If it's the latter I got bored and stopped playing it, if it's the former, it's piss easy and you shouldn't need tips :p

Circle of the Moon is the best of the 3, and possibly the hardest.

I love Castlevania and Aria of Sorrow is by far my favourite of the 3 GBA Castlevanias. All I can advise you if you want tips is to go to gamefaqs. They have all the information you could ever need.

The best Castlevania is Symphony of the Night (PS1/PSP/360). It was released for the playstation 1 (also downloadable from PSP playstation store/Xbox Arcade) and features amazing score, atmosphere, game mechanics, game size and some amazingly cheesy yet great voice acting.
Richter: Die monster. You don't belong in this world!
Dracula: It was not by my hand that I am once again given flesh. I was called here by humans who wish to pay me tribute.
Richter:Tribute!?! You steal men's souls and make them your slaves!
Dracula: Perhaps the same could be said of all religions....
Richter: Your words are as empty as your soul! Mankind ill needs a savior such as you!
Dracula: What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets. But enough talk.... Have at you!

I also recommend Dawn of Sorrow on the DS. It's pretty much a remake of Aria of Sorrow in terms of mechanics although story-wise, its a sequel. The game machanics are expanded and the graphics are greatly enhanced.

Circle of the Moon (GBA) as it was my first portable Castlevania experience. The gameplay mechanics are simplistic compared to the ones that followed but the atmosphere and music was the 2nd best in the whole series after SotN.

Harmony of Dissonance (GBA) was very disappointing. The music was absolutely awful, the castle designs were bland, there are no secret areas any more and it is the only Castlevania that seemed like a chore to finish.
  • Aria of Sorrow is fantastic, way better than the Dawn of Sorrow. I didn't find it too difficult, although there are a few tricky bits, and i'm rubbish at most games! The only advise i can really give is to try and get as many souls as you can, some of them are really useful. And hit all the walls cos some of them contain hidden paths.

takapa, considering you went through such lengths to come up with a detailed post full of links, I find it rather appalling you failed to mention there is a Saturn version of SOTN, too, which also has slightly more content than the original PS1 game. As for the cheesy voice acting, that's what you get when you don't play the Japanese version :D (well, the Saturn version never came out in EU/US anyway).

On-topic, I've played all those GBA games and liked them a lot, very playable. Circle Of The Moon had this optional battle arena part where you had to clear some very difficult rooms, I remember spending ages trying to do that but there were some horribly difficult rooms later on. Certainly something for those who like a challenge.

Aria of Sorrow I'm afraid I was never able to finish, I played it on a GBA emulator and in the final battle the game would get stuck (though it did not actually freeze) ...

I forgot about the Saturn version, but you are right in that they added a few extra bits. I remember reading about it in a retro magazine somewhere :) I would expect the Saturn version would be quite the collectors item these days.

I was quite lucky back in 95. I was on the way to buy a Saturn with pretty much my entire bank balance when a friend got on the bus and persuaded me to buy a Playstation instead.

I found it in my local Gamestation in one of those bundle packs along with a PS1 and a load of other games! ?45 was all I paid for the lot :D

Anyone playing the new Castlevania and the Xbox360/PS3?
