For example, 15 years ago I programmed C++ quite regularly and implemented a number of projects. But I haven't touched C++ in over 10 years and certainly not kept up to date with the various APIs. So, even though I created some great C++ applications in the past, should I even mention it on my CV?

If it was relevant to the position I was applying for I would.

Sometimes the hard reality of it all hits home, its great to get a education as always, but sometimes having it seems to make it less worth while considering the companies are looking for experience.

What I am doing now is looking at the departments and seeing what courses they teach and what reseach their staff is doing. It scares the pants of me somtimes, especially the complex maths looking stuff. I have an affinity with computers, programing and web technologies, but not with maths sady.

Its somthing only time can put right as I need to spent time working on this chink in my skill set. I don't want to get thrust into a situation where I am expected to say present object oriented concepts in Java or C++ whilst at the same time being asked to do it in a high level maths context that is currently above my skill set.

Saved 40% of my net salary for 9 years. I believe in rainy days.

I don't claim any benefits and I think there would be something wrong with the system if someone with a decent amount of savings could claim benefits. Safety nets should be paid for by the fortunate for the less fortunate. I'm lucky to have been quite fortunate in my career. That said, I know many people who are on crazy money and have next to no savings as they spend it on fancy cars and fancy women.

Fair play fella, just wondered what someone would do if they were made redundant in another country, presumed they would just come straight home.

Difficult one though, i'm sure theres lots of people on decent money who dont save money 'for a rainy day' like you did. Not fair if you dont get benefits as you were sensible and someone blowing their money 24/7 does.

And yeah blowing the money on fancy cars and women sounds a great way to go ! ;)

When I started working I had the option of putting 4% of my income into the State Pension Scheme and maybe getting ?40 a month out of it from a scheme that the provider can arbitarily change or cancel or keep pushing into the future. Any other pension provider would be bang to rights before the Financial Services Commission. Just 'cos it's the government-run scheme they can get away with anything.
Or, I could put 6% into a contribution-based work pension, which would pay out when I was 75 (!!!) and get about ?60 a month.
Or, I could put 25% of my income into my own scheme, which would pay out from my mid-60s from whenever my mortgage is paid off, and pay me about ?800 a month. No brainer.

Or... I could have done what most people in their 20s do, and spend 150% of their income on fripperies.

Thats what i did ! I had the odd friend who never went out and who wanted to save tons of money and be boring ;)

Just felt i lived life tons in my 20's and early 30's, yeah if i had saved tons of money i might have a bigger house etc but i'm not fussed. The memories i have far outweigh a lower mortgage or that. 25% of your income, damn !

Time to be sensible when you hit late 30's, not when youre 24 etc ! Give me lots of nights out in my 20's, a bit of debt and women anyday of the week !

You should have seen the paperwork my wife had to fill before she could take up teaching, then it was the endless criminal record checks, then the character references. They went into every detail of her life, probably trying to find some dirt on her. In the end, they couldn't find any..

I did a temp teaching job at her school - the IT teacher had been arrested on child porn offences and it was two months until the end of term, so the wife suggested I take over for the last two months and give them time to find a replacement. They did more digging into my background for that one. Needless to say I got the all clear. They did offer me the permenant placement at the end but I turned it down, teaching all those brats did nothing for me, I only did the temp job as a favour.
