Web Hosting recommendations

edited November 2010 in Chit chat
G'day chaps,

Question for you, there is a domain I've got my eye on, but instead of spending my hard earned loot willy-nilly on the first hosting company I come across, I was wondering if there is a particular company that you can recommend?

I've done some research and a couple of the big players (123-reg, fasthosts) have been universally panned by review sites. Are they as bad as made out, or is it a case of dissatisfied customers making the most noise whilst the majority are satisfied with the service they receive?

Any advice gratefully received.

Ian

Our work used to use Fasthosts shared web and SQL servers for about four years and never had a problem with them. You just need to ensure that everything you want to run WILL actually run on their web servers. For example, they won't install the M$ .NET Charting components on the servers so you're buggered if you want to use them in your web site.

We've since bought a dedicated hosted server from them due to expansion and it's awesome.

sounds like you dropped lucky as fasthosts are regarded with scorn in the industry!

the only thing I always say.. is get the domain name yourself.. via no one..

any BS goes on , then you have the domain name and you can go elsewhere if need be.

someone I was gonna build a website for years ago, went ahead with out me.. ended up paying 5 times what I'd have charged.

I agree with fog, get the domain name yourself then you are free to shop around for hosting.. I used 123-reg to purchase the domains I have and that was a painless process. I couldn't comment on hosting plans though as I only use free hosting at the moment (x10hosting).
    So far, so meh :)

I'd also agree - theh wrong host will screw you... the right host will sort you out properly but beware!

Also - beware of sites that have searches for domain names as some will buy the name you search for and but it to sell on to you......
