Most classical guitarists would make most rock guitarists look laughable I think.

EDIT: Ah but you said 'rockier'..guess I should read closer!

    In that case

    Richie Blackmore
    Eric Clapton
    Jake E Lee
    Yngwie Malmsteen
Cant think of a 5th one right now that stand out

    Never rated Jimmy Hendrix...at all.

Technically as a player I agree completely but he effectively invented modern electric rock guitar.

It stopped being strum, strum, change chord, strum strum strum, change chord to Whoooooo.... You can do THAT on a guitar.

Jimi Hendrix wasn't really a good guitar player, he could make interesting and unique sounds though.

    Jimi Hendrix
    Joe Satriani
    Steve Vai
    Yingwie Malmsteen
    Marty Friedman

Voted Jimi at the top slot as he revolutionized rock music with his way he would experiment with feedback and distortion. Jimi's music just never seems to age - his music still has me in awe 40 years after his death... Long live Jimi...

Hmmm, dunno how you make that assumption... Try watching some old Jimi Hendrix concerts on DVD...

The only proof you need that Jimi was an awesome guitar player is this imo:

also, along the same lines the rhythm guitar (right channel) in this is just so awesome (and impossible to play the same - at least for me!):

Yes - he also played a lot of very loud guitar wanking at times... but... he invented that too ;)

Sadly a lot of his technically best stuff was never released - some of it (although not completely unaltered) is on posthumous releases such as First Rays of the New Rising Sun - but... we never heard his best.

Edit: Oh, and my top favourite guitarists would be:

    Hendrix
    Dave Gilmour
    Eric Clapton
Pete Townshend (very underrated guitarist imo - not a good soloist but his rhythm guitar made a very large part of the Who sound)

Saw him live last Sunday. The whole show was excellent, and I did like his guitar playing - particularly when he stuck to the funky stuff. I'd probably have Eric Clapton at the top. I like the way he makes it look effortless - much cooler than arched over a fender gurning away like some rock-gods do. If we're allowed to step away from rock, then John Williams is simply amazing. It takes some kind of witchcraft to get one guitar to make the sounds he gets out of it.

I'm going to throw a completely different name in there...

    Andy Summers, from The Police.

Played in a great variety of styles with the band, including some awesome solos, and has since gone on composing and playing.

I saw a clip of a recent Prince show on tv and he played an amazing guitar solo, i never realised he could play the guitar (not being a fan i tended not to listen to his stuff) but he blew me away.
Other great guitarists that deserve a mention: Richie Blackmore, Tony Iommi, Keith Richards and George Harrison.

Yeah, the Purple One is pretty handy on the axe. Good call on Keith Richards - the opening to Satisfaction is perfection. That, Layla and Money for Nothing are my favourite guitar licks. Still, John Williams > *.
