Car key fobs...
Not sure if we have any mechanics on here that can help but, I recently bought a 53 plate Toyota Avensis T4 - I needed something new, my Ford Cougar was falling to bits and the jokes about me taking a cougar for a ride twice a day were getting lame.
The Avensis comes with 3 keys, 2 have fobs on with all the lock/unlock etc and the 3rd is like a back-up key in case you lose the first 2 - it's just a plain key with no buttons on.
The problem is that the second master key does not work at all. The lock/unlock etc does not respond and even trying to unlock the car with the key sets the alarms off. I thought this might be down to a crap battery but I have replaced the battery with the suggested type from the manual but still no joy.
So I did some research on t'web and found that this is a little trick that Toyota dealers play on a regular basis. It seems they want you to take the key back in and then charge you for re-flashing the key and feed you some shite reason for it not working and how flashing it takes an hour and a fancy computer...to me though this is a very last resort!
I also found this How to Fix Toyota key fobs - everything but step 6 works for me, I can get the locks to cycle and everything but the damn key will not re-flash!
Anyone else tried this and succeeded? Or have any idea where I am going wrong...
Cheers

The instructions do look clear though. Some manufacturer's keys can only be coded via their diagnostic kit (I don't mean the transponder, the actual locking too)
Is the key radio or infrared ? , if its infrared, look at it with your digital camera screen you should be able to see if its actually outputting a signal or not. Its not unknown for the led's to come adrift.

When somethings 7 years old i dont believe you'll get it sorted for nothing.
I had a problem with one of the lights coming up eractically on my car, cant go back to them saying my 8 year old car has this problem - its your responsibility.
Cant you call up a Toyota garage and see how much it is ?
Sadly nowadays they seem to charge you for everything, these engine management systems are meant to be good but the second a light comes on, you take it in, they connect it to a laptop, 70 quid already, sometimes theres nothing wrong so they cancel the light, still 70 quid for 3 minutes work.
