3D Racers...what's your favourite?

edited January 2011 in Games
I'm talking along the lines of outrun and super hang-on

A personal fave is Nightmare Rally (more for the loading screen), I really wanted to like lotus but I didn't like the split screen.

Gotta be Chase H.Q., it was better on the speccy than on my pc engine.

Probably Chase H.Q but before that was released I'd say Wec Le Mans which I thought played really well on the Speccy.

Yeah, Chase HQ has to be the best one on the Speccy...and Super Hang On was probably the best bike one....

Enduro Racer was pretty cool too, though!

I also spent way longer than I should have playing Twin Turbo V8.....which could hardly be described as 3D or as a racer....Hehe..

    Deathchase!

Full Throttle was always my favourite. Frustrating but addictive.

Stunt car racer and Conquered flag gets a mention for being one of the first games I played on the speccy..hasn't aged well though.

your memory seems a bit chequered, beanz.
  • Deathchase. And it still plays well today! I've never been a fan of driving games on the speccy, and time hasn't been kind to them. But Deathchase is the exception.

YAY!!! I loved that game too :D I never completed it, but I used to be able to get quite some way! It's not aged very well though

I always liked Crazy Cars II

It's very smooth and fast, plus, it came with a massive map. Not a great deal to do mind you, but still good fun to have a drive around in!

it was a nice idea to do it in wireframe, but I found it too sluggish to play

    Chevy Chase wasn't too bad.

Neither was Cisco Heat or Roadblasters.

I really enjoyed that game too. I like the nice touch with the clouds. Very slow to play now, but ramp up the emulator speed and it's not too bad at all.

hehe, that's what happens when you rely on spell check and don't check the spell check.

(Checkered on American spell check btw)

I mean *I* relied on spell check (it changed chequered to Conquered on me)...chequered comes up as error as it want's it to be checkered and I just automatically *corrected* it (wrongly obviously) without looking at it.

racing games on the Spectrum were usually crap

    Enduro Racer was, however, awesome.
  • edited December 2010
I would have to go with Enduro Racer and Nightmare Rally as well, they where both really good!
  • edited December 2010
    Roadblasters 128. The absolute best.
with Wec Le Mans in close second (although the Amstrad version was a tad better)

Most are good tho, with Chase HQ, Miami Cobra, and even Crazy Cars providing a lot of fun.

I've always found Nightmare Rally funny...it has not only a superb loading screen, but also is very addictive. But my fave is, of course, Deathchase.

Other good games are Enduro Racer, Out Run & Speed King II (remember spending hours and hours playing Speed King II)...

I quite enjoyed this on the CPC.. A bit blocky however..

Wec Le Mans all the way :)

My favourites where Chase HQ - such a polished game, Enduro Racer, love those jumps and WEC Le Mans which i used to play a lot.

Nightmare Rally was also surprisingly good. Found games such as Power Drift to be very poor graphically, shame as i remember hoping this conversion would have turned out alright.

Well you can't beat a spot of Deathchase

I always had a liking for Chequered Flag too - I liked the 'realism' of it. Great fun playing against my mate trying to beat each others times.

TT Racer was my favourite, basically for being Revs with bikes. It's not aged brilliantly as the frame rate is a little slow by modern standards, and sim racers are generally a lot more realistic too, but I'd think it was the best of its kind for most of the lifetime of the Spectrum.

I rather like Chequered Flag too though and I don't think time has been that unkind to it. The only real gripe with it is much the same as when it came out; with just you on the track the only racing you do is against the clock.

I never really took to any of these pseudo-3D racers. I liked the into-the-screen style, such as Space Harrier, but I never really felt the handling was enjoyable in the racing games. Mind you, I didn't have Enduro Racer. The only one I really rated was Super Hang-On on the ST.

In spite of I find now Chequered Flag a very very crappy game, I have fond memories of it... a question of nostalgia, I suppose... :-)
