Are Ant and Dec killing gaming?

I thought Donkey Kong Country looked pretty good until I saw those 2 numpties advertising it. They've really devalued the game for me now and it's put me off buying it. I just wondered does anyone else feel like this or am I being stupid? I don't know what it is with Nintendo lately but they can make the best game in the world sound like the worst kind of shovelware.

    Think you're being stupid ;)

Theyve got a whole range of numpties advertising Nintendo stuff, Harry kewell and his bimbo wife advertising the DS, JLS (those x factor numpties) playing on the Wii.

I mean the adverts are embarassing, terrible, the ad agency should get fired for them !

But at the end of the day they probably work, Ant and Dec as much as we dislike them are huge TV presenters so advertising the Wii etc might be a good idea.

I'm personally glad to see gaming become this big and mainstream. In the old days it was thought of as a bit more 'geeky' whereas nowadays everyones got a Wii or DS etc.

When I was at primary school, I was heavily into my spectrum gaming and all of my peers considered that to be a bit weird. There was a huge stigma attatched to computers for some reason. Same with using the internet for 'social' communication 13 years ago.

Now, the majority of households have computers and internet access, and all of those things are common and mainstream, and even being endorsed by celebrities.
Some of those people from primary school now have to eat their words!

I knew even back then that I would have the last laugh :)

Yeah i remember back in the mid 90's some of my mates came round to 'see the internet'. I was the 'geek' apparently as i was into computers, a few years later they're all on the net and theyre the saddos doing Facebook/Twitter which i dont touch with a bargepole.

Same as consoles, i had a few mates with consoles but now they all seem to have them, they used to take the mick a few years back and now here they are swinging round a steering wheel while they play Mario Kart on the wii !

I am not sure Ant & Dec have any real impact on the sale of the game really, they were prob chosen because of their childish like behaviour and that they are present im a celeb (reality/celeb zzzz!)
Fans of the original DKC will puchase it anyways,i am more concered with the fact its yet another `more of the same` remake from an old title im getting really concered just how much the nintendo classic title cow can be milked before it runs dry

I second this. For years gamers moaned constantly about their hobby not being taken seriously, etc, etc. Now it's become mainstream all they do is bitch about the amount of shovelware, popularity of Wii, etc. They've even given themselves a ridiculous new name - Hardcore! FFS.

  • Personally i'd prefer gaming to remain unpopular and inventive rather than popular and bland. Mainstream = xfactor and Ant and Dec and Nintendo are becoming the Stock, Aitkin and Waterman of video games.

inventive rather than popular and bland.

Those games are still there. You just have to look outside the top ten and the mainstream pap from the likes of Activision.

Personally, I've always thought Nintendo ads were a bit on the naff side...

Interesting a thread of how a game is perceived due to marketing, rather than is it a good game or not. I don't give a monkeys (see what I did there?) who makes a game, who advertises a game or who else plays it. How it plays to me is absolutely all the matters.

Why would Ant and Dec be killing gaming?

They probably adding a couple of million sales due to their popularity.

Nintendo may have lost 1 sale cos of A & D but I doubt Mr Nintendo will lose much sleep over you not buying...
I wanna tell you a story 'bout a woman I know...

I often wonder how that was recieved by non-computer types. Imagining someone playing that on vinyl listening to it on their headphones for the first time....

Which isn't being made because those making real music know there's no point. The whole problem with Nintendo's ads is that even when they release a "proper" game, the way they advertise it makes it sound rubbish which puts off their potential customers. Nintendo then whinge about their core games not selling and go back to making Wii play and crap like that.

Yes it is, you're obviously not looking in the right places. Avoid the singles charts and broaden your horizons.

Nintendo know their target market, they're not trying to appeal to the longterm buyers, they already know they've got them onside. They're trying to appeal to the more casual gamers. The Wii isn't targeted at the hardcore gamer huddled over a screen and joystick in a darkened bedroom but to a family orientated audience who can play together and interact.

Totally agree, went to type the same thing. Its obvious who theyre trying to sell to when you see the likes of JLS/Jedward/Ant and Dec etc. The hardcore will buy their games whatever, but theyre trying to break into the other markets who might be looking to buy their first console

As for the top 40 sadly its not relevant anymore, one reason why Top of the Pops disappeared. People our age are really interested in the album charts (if that), the singles chart has long been a joke
