That's in a different league from anything on the Spectrum. 30 Minutes to load!! How much memory did those things have? It reminds me a bit of a 3D race game I have on a Nintendo clone, but is much better by the looks and sounds of it.

The Atari 800 originally had 48K, later models had 64K. Games just took ages to load from tape because the protocol was abysmally inefficient and, unlike other machines, it wasn't really possible to write turbo loaders.

Anyway, if we're going to look at other 8-bits, the CPC was an excellent machine for arcade racers:

it was possible to write turbo's for it. errm jeff minter game was quite speedy at loading, that I always remember. but the majority of serious users on atari had disk drives, much like c64 folk.. but the atari stuff was far more scarce / pricey

this is new.. might be worth a look for me anyway

hmm not too shabby at all, in fact quite good actually

Burning Rubber had access to the added hardware on the gx4000 and the later Amstrad models, did either of the other two?

I always thought the GX4000 died a quick death, would've liked to have got my mits on one.

Talking of racers like this Fire and Forget II on GX4000 looked pretty decent, and I remember it seemed to give the Master System version a run for it's money in the early issue of Mean Machines that both were reviewed in.

    I bet a GX4000 goes for a pretty penny now.....either that or just a few pennies :D

Nope, they're both standard CPC titles. In fact, Burnin' Rubber is pretty much just an upgraded version of WEC Le Mans.

    If it helps, it's crap.

You can pick up a GX for between ?10-?40 these days, usually depending upon whether it has anything other than Burnin' Rubber with it. Finding other cart games is trickier though, especially the few decent ones.

there are a few on the 64.. 2 by EA .. 1 Ferrari game and the other was a fav of mine , grand prix circuit

the trouble / issue was with the screen refresh...

but if you want to be amazed by a driving game try elektraglide on the atari 8 bit (800 xl etc).. loading time was 20-30 minutes on tape

wow, this game is from 85?

yep, that ball blazer / rescue on fraculus are the best versions on that machine of any of them also.. thats one game to show off the machine.. along with things like star raiders 2 etc

thing with elektraglide, the c64 didn't have as much colours for a start.

but adam billyard was / is an exceptional coder.. speccy does have a bit to thank the atari 8 bit for.. Matty Smith admitted he was "inspired" by Miner 49er by Bill Hogue

Amstrad CpC is a lovely machine. Now that one certainly knew how to do racers.
Wec Le Mans is brilliant. I aways play that alongside the Speccy one. It's easier too!

Speed King 2 I prob had most fun on as I was playing with mates and it`s a laugh in 2 player mode.
Solo though would probably be Stunt Car Racer and when I had my 16k Speccy, 3D Deathchase was great.
Roadblasters 128k I had on disk on my +3 was a nice game too.

Elektraglide was a superb game , although pretty difficult.

The Atari had some pretty awesome games , just look at Fractulus (amongst many others). It's just a shame that they never realised the potential of the machine , as it was quickly reduced to inferior ports of C64 from about '85 onwards when the machine was clearly capable of so much more

I used to play on my next door neigbours Amstrad cpc.
He didn`t have many games I remember. Ikari Warriors and Bombjack were really good conversions though.
I`d say the CPC Bombjack could be as good as the Spectrums. It even might handle better!
Ikari warriors makes the Spectrum version look sh1t.
Best games I played on the CPC them. As I said he didn`t seem to have many games and those almost 10 minute loading times could be a pain I think I remember.

Knight lore was the same game but 1 extra colour which was a bit brighter :)

I`ve played Flying Shark on the CPC on emulator and the extra colour they add there really helps. Uridium has the extra colour but seemed to be really choppy or something wrong to me.
Lazy port I reckon. Or a bad emulator?
I remember Trapdoor was really blocky on the CPC. Same game though I guess.
Auf Monty is good too. More colours. Less sound effects though.

Which killed the atmosphere. The sound on the spectrum version was much better too. That toki tok of the footsteps on the spectrum.. brilliant

Yeah you could argue that :) Same game though.

Yeah I know what you mean. Great conversion really.

I do think that Ultimate are underrated for the sound effects in their games though. Atic Atac comes to mind.

Jetpac had good sound FX when I come to thing of it too. That shooting sound.
I still remember it and when you`re ship flew up.
The splat also when ya got killed :)

I'm so glad you posted this piccy as I was begining to think that the game didn't exist. All I could find was the other NM game (The excruciatingly difficult 3rd person one.) Gotta get a copy of this one pronto!

Remids me that Super Monaco GP was okay, if a lil easy. You cant crash on the right hand side of the road, folks!

Is that 'Nigel Mansel's Grand Prix'? If it is, that was one of the last commercially released games on the old speccy.

Yes, I didn't know that companies like Gremlin released games in 1993...

the black and white grainy dithered graphics make it impossbile to play.

    looks horrible

From the screenshot, I'd say it looked really good. Not played it tho, so I couldn't say for sure.

If i remember right, Gremlin were forced to release it. At the time Your Sinclair had a Save Our Spectrum campaign going on. They were usring readers to send an enclosed coupon to varoius software companies and urge them to release more spectrum product. It also got US Gold to release Street Fighter 2 on the spec as well.
